El conocimiento arqueológico referido al Occidente de México hasta hace relativamente poco tiempo, deriva de las ofrendas depositadas al interior de las conocidas tumbas de tiro: bóvedas subterráneas excavadas en el subsuelo a las cuales se accedía por medio de un tiro desde la superficie. La bella y descriptiva cerámica funeraria de estas tumbas fue exhibida, desde hace décadas, en numerosos espacios museográficos y bibliográficos, ilustrando de manera recurrente, las características de los pueblos prehispánicos de esta extensa parte de Mesoamérica.
