Beyond Homo Sapiens

The second volume of the trilogy Beyond Homo SapiensDoubt, explores and interprets the historical events from the discovery of America to the end of the 19th Century. Enlightenment began with the acceptance by a majority of the worlds population that the Earth rotates around the Sun. Symbolically, it meant that our minds became centered on the Light of wisdom instead of the darkness of ignorance. Mari Suarez, the author, shows us how Homo sapiens managed to gain more tools with the marriage of science and crafts. However, his biological automatic reactions of self defense, immediate gratification and drive to reproduce have been left untouched, perpetuating and making even less human the world in which we live. Spiritual insight continued to be absent from our daily lives. Mari explains how two classic fiction characters of the time exemplified the inner struggle of mankind to leave behind blind faith. Don Quixote's Cervantes, and Hamlet's Shakespeare. Mari makes clear, Cervantes wrote about the world of blind faith and feudalism in decline, while Shakespeare explored with Hamlet the world of the bourgeoisie and doubt in ascendance.

Chicano Sketches

Mario Su‡rez will tell you: GarzaÕs Barber Shop is more than razors, scissors, and hair. It is where men, disgruntled at the vice of the rest of the world, come to get things off their chests. The lawbreakers come in to rub elbows with the sheriffÕs deputies. And when zoot-suiters come in for a trim, Garza puts on a bit of zoot talk and "hep-cats with the zootiest of them." A key figure in the foundation of Chicano literature, Mario Su‡rez (1923-1998) was among the first writers to focus not only on Chicano characters but also on the multicultural space in which they live, whether a Tucson barbershop or a Manhattan boxing ring. Many of his stories have received wide acclaim through pub...

Body Double

Body Double explores the myriad ways that film artists have represented the creative process. In this highly innovative work, Lucy Fischer draws on a neglected element of auteur studies to show that filmmakers frequently raise questions about the paradoxes of authorship by portraying the onscreen writer. Dealing with such varied topics as the icon of the typewriter, the case of the writer/director, the authoress, and the omnipresent infirm author, she probes the ways in which films can tell a plausible story while contemplating the conditions and theories of their making. By examining many forms of cinema, from Hollywood and the international art cinema to the avant-garde, Fischer considers ...
