This book is a guide to being as awesome as me. It started out as a joke and I got a bit carried away but it did turn out pretty awesome, though if you are overly sensitive about your life choices or aren't all that smart, you might not think so. You also might find it a little frustrating if you have a penchant for correct grammar or don't like made up words. That said, if you have a crack anyway you can totally have four hundred Cool Points and let's face it, everybody wants Cool Points.

If War Should Come

If War Should Come

This is a pictorial look at aspects of life in Britain and in other parts of Europe in the run up to the start of WWII using press photographs from the era. It examines the reality behind the claim that Britain was a nation prepared for the coming war. The images reproduced here are now in the archives of The Times and The Sunday Times. The 1930s are put in context by referencing back to the end of the Great War and the Versailles Treaty. The book explores how Britain and, to a lesser extent, France were confronted with the next world war even as they struggled, in both material and psychological terms, to recover from the previous one. Another theme is whether the press was complicit in the...

Shooting Vietnam

What was it like to be a military combat photographer in the most photographed war in history — the Vietnam War? Shooting Vietnam takes you there as you read the firsthand accounts and view the hundreds of photographs by men who lived the war through the lens of a camera. They documented everything from the horror of combat to the people and culture of a land they suddenly found themselves immersed in. The Second World War presented a huge range of challenges to press photography both in terms of its execution and getting the results in print. Life on the home front was the main subject until the invasion of France changed everything in 1944. Photographers from The Times were part of a talented group who were there to capture the momentous events taking place from the moment the troops stepped ashore, as the Allies fought their way from the D-Day beaches all the way to Berlin. They captured thousands of images of the fighting and its aftermath: bombed out towns, tanks and the inevitable human death toll, but also troops moving through a scarred landscape, the civilian population in joy and...

On the Marsh

'He does write beautifully, especially of his greatest love - our wild birds ... On The Marsh is a delightful read.' Christopher Hart, Daily Mail How the rewilding of eight acres of Norfolk marshland inspired a family and brought nature even closer to home. When writer Simon Barnes heard a Cetti's warbler sing out as he turned up to look at a house for sale, he knew immediately that he had found his new home. The fact that his garden backed onto an area of marshy land only increased the possibilities, but there was always the fear that it might end up in the wrong hands and be lost to development or intensive farming. His wife saw through the delicate negotiations for the purchase. Once they...
