Prisoners of War in Contemporary Conflict
"The International Committee of the Red Cross' release of its 2020 Commentary on the 1949 Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, which updated the existing 1960 "Pictet Commentary," drew global attention to the international humanitarian law governing prisoners of war POWs. This book contributes to the dialogue with a collection of capita selecta identified by the contributors as meriting examination. Part I examines qualification for POW status from two angles. Four contributions deal with types and domains of warfare - proxy, fluid, maritime, and space. The remaining three take on issues regarding the status of detainees set forth in Article 4 of the Third Geneva Convention, specifically combatants, civilians accompanying the force, and members of a levée en masse. Part II discusses the treatment to which POWs are entitled. The Christian Zionist Lobby and U.S.-Israel Policy
ABSTRACT: This research explores the role of the Christian Zionist Lobby in shaping U.S. policy towards Israel. It is posited that the Christian Zionist Lobby, due to their eschatological goals, diverge from the interests of the larger Israel Lobby described by Mearsheimer and Walt. To test this hypothesis an exploratory case study is implemented to explain why the U.S. shifted its policy from supporting the Road Map to backing Israeli unilateralism. As the results of this study show, the Christian Zionists did actively oppose the Road Map and may have influenced American policy making. However, it would be a mistake to characterize the Gaza pullout as the most desirable policy alternative for the Christian Zionist Lobby. This study concludes that when comparing the lobbying efforts against the Road Map and Israeli unilateralism, the Christian Zionists actively opposed the former policy while the evidence in support of the latter policy remained inconclusive.
The Effects of U.S. Middle East Foreign Policy on American Muslims
Over the past thirteen years the United States has used military force against three different Muslim-majority nations. These conflicts have lead to the deaths of many Muslims, including many innocent civilians. Meanwhile, American Muslims have become conflicted about their identities as Muslims and Americans. However, this does not mean that they have become a fifth column within America. What it does mean is that they have felt anguish regarding the torment of their religious brethren, while at the same time retaining their American identity. Post-9/11, Muslim American groups have acknowledged their place in the racial ordering of America. Muslim Americans understand that they are second rate citizens within their own country.
