Class 60s

The Class 60 was the last truly British-built diesel locomotive design. From 1990, the locomotive was gradually delivered, with 100 in total going to the Railfreight sectors of Metal, Coal, Construction and Petroleum. Their introduction did not go smoothly, however, and they took almost three years to enter service due to various teething troubles. Once these were ironed out, the class became reasonably reliable, and examples of other classes that were getting very tired at the time were progressively withdrawn. Privatization saw all the class being sold on to English, Welsh & Scottish Railways and, in 2004, the first Class 60 was withdrawn. Towards the end of the 2000s, almost all of the lo...

The Class 37 was introduced from the early 1960s. It was designed to be a general-purpose loco, equally at home on freight or passenger trains. There have been very few routes that this class has not operated. They have proved reliable workhorses for UK railways. With over 200 images, this book is an illustrated celebration of Class 37s.

In the late 1980s, the locomotive-hauled stock on Network SouthEast's West of England route was in urgent need of replacement. The BR Class 50s locomotives were not suited to the stop-start nature of the route, and frequently broke down. With the UK economy in decline in the early 1990s, it was found that Regional Railways had over-ordered Class 158s at the same time as Network SouthEast was looking for a similar number of new diesel trains. NSE agreed to take on the surplus Class 158s. The original 22 units were rebuilt by Babcock Rail in Rosyth Dockyard before entering traffic. This entailed fitting first-class accommodation and retention toilets, and various other modifications, and they were named Class 159s. Illustrated with over 150 images from around the country, this book charts the routes and services undertaken by the BR Class 159s.

Class 31s

Originally British Railways Type 2, later Class 31 diesel electric locos were solidly built, but also very heavy for their size. Primarily designed for workings in the East of England, the locomotives eventually found work over all the Regions (except Scottish) and on all types of workings. Ultimately, a total of 263 locos were produced, the last emerging ex-works in October 1962. This book is a pictorial look at some of the work they have done from around the mid-1980s to present day.

In the mid-1980s, one of British Rail's major customers of heavy block trains bought their own locos. They eventually agreed a deal with the US firm General Motors to provide them with the locos designated as Class 59s. They are now over 30 years old and are still working. With over 230 images, this book shows the Class 59s through the years.

Class 442s

First introduced in the late 1980s, the Class 442s were like nothing that had been seen before in terms of Southern Region electric multiple units. This book is a pictorial tribute of more than 200 images to what was, by far and away, the best electric unit ever to have worked on the Southern Region electrified lines.
