Music/ideology

  • Categories: Art

Music/Ideology is a response to the question: Must the practice of music analysis and music theory always reinscribe the ideology of aesthetic autonomy? And, if not, under what circumstances does it reinscribe that ideology? The responses to these questions should appeal not only to music and cultural theorists, but also to a larger audience engaged in critical theory. These essays serve as an introduction to the broad array of issues arising from approaches that represent the full spectrum, from music-theoretical to marxist and feminist issues. Such questions are of vital importance, and not only to those who are engaged in establishing a connection among music theory, music analysis, and aesthetic ideology. Music/Ideology presents today's most interesting critical thinkers in postmodern theory and music theory, introducing an interdisciplinary approach and covering a wide range of subjects - both by implication and explication.

Drip-dry Shirts

  • Categories: Art

Every season, with alarming predictability, yet another graphic design book sets out to capture definitively the zeitgeist. The blurb always makes the same claim: that the book shows the work of the newest, youngest, most innovative designers. This restless search is self-perpetuating, can never be sated and ultimately intensifies nagging fears and insecurities among designers. An understanding of design history has the reverse effect. It explains who we are and sets contemporary work in an expansive and broad landscape, one that is more objective and less introspective. Without knowledge and experience we are lost, floating in a sea of unanswered questions. Drip-dry shirts seeks to answer some of the questions. Book jacket.

The mind’s eye as a design principle Lucius Burckhardt (1925–2003) outlined his theory of the “smallest possible intervention” back in the early 1980s. The idea of minimal intervention runs through his entire oeuvre, from his critique of urbanism to the science of walking. The “smallest possible intervention” denotes a planning theory that assumes two “views” within landscape design: that which is actually visible and that in our mind’s eye. The theory of the minimal intervention means not interfering excessively with the existing landscape, but instead working with the landscape in our minds to develop an aesthetic understanding of the environment. In this book, available for the first time in English, the Swiss sociologist applies this formula to many areas of design. Intellectual distillation of Lucius Burckhardt’s theories available for the first time in English Exploration of the relationships between planning and building Rationalization and needs

Today's education and communications media are seen to be the main cause of the anonymity of contemporary music and suggestions are made to improve this situation. Leigh Landy investigates audio-visual applications that have hardly been explored, new timbres and sound sources, the discovery of musical space, new notations, musical politics, and the 'musical community' in an attempt to incite more composers, musicians and musicologists to get this music out into the works and to stimulate the creation of new experimental works.

Theory of Garden Art

"Hirschfeld's five-volume Theorie der Gartenkunst, published between 1779 and 1785 in both German and French, has long been recognized for its importance in the history of gardening, but its reputation has been primarily based on secondary sources. . . . Parshall's fluid translation (from the German) and judicious editing . . . will change all that."—LandForum
