An Open Place

Written from an ecumenical standpoint as a practical aid for moving those experienced in individual spiritual direction toward group practices This book responds to the movement to expand spiritual direction beyond the classic on-with-one model. Group spiritual direction has the potential to offer the rich experience of individual spiritual direction to a much wider audience, yet very little has been written to provide guidance for starting such groups. This book responds to that challenge. It outlines ways that a diverse and ecumenical group of spiritual directors worked to initiate groups in multiple contexts. It examines the many variables-among directors, directees, even meeting spaces-that affect and enliven this ministry. And it summarizes pitfalls, success, and discoveries.

Spirituality with Clothes On

There is no such thing as a naked spirituality. Our spirituality is always shaped by the clothes of our experience. The quest of Spirituality with Clothes On is to acknowledge that we do wear clothes; and, by examining them, we begin to understand ourselves and accept others who are wearing different outfits. We are what we wear: we cannot separate ourselves from our gender, personality, developmental stage, family, historical background, culture, or the difficult experiences of our lives. We need to acknowledge all these things, reflect on them--and sometimes even embrace them--in order to truly become ourselves.

Living Prayer

When do Christians pray? Do we only pray at our daily devotional times or when the Lord's prayer is recited at a public event or in a worship litany? Many of us are acquainted with emergency prayer when an accident or heart attack involves one of our close relatives. At such times we often do not trust our own relationship with God enough, so we anxiously await the arrival of a minister at the hospital bedside for real prayer to happen. Is Christian prayer only an activity we practice in such ways, or is it more than that? Richard Bowman, in this Bible study and devotional guide, shows clearly that Jesus and New Testament church leaders taught living prayer as a way of life. Each of the twenty-five chapters includes a biblical text, some reflections on the text, and an easily carried-out assignment that leads readers into deeper conversations with the Spirit of God abiding in each of Christ's disciples.

Sharing Peace

Sharing Peace brings together leading Mennonite and Catholic theologians and ecclesial leaders to reflect on the recent, first-ever international dialogue between the Mennonite World Conference and the Vatican. Contributors include: Scott Appleby (Kroc Institute, Notre Dame) Alan Kreider (Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary) Helmut Harder (Mennonite co-chair of the international dialogue) Drew Christiansen, SJ (Georgetown University, Catholic delegate to the international dialogue) John Roth (Goshen Colleg...

Serving the Word

This book and the essays contained within are dedicated to Dr. Chuck Sackett in recognition of his thirty-two years of teaching at Lincoln Christian University. He currently serves as Professor at Large but has held a variety of roles and titles during his thirty-two years there. These essays are written by current colleagues and former students who have had the privilege of studying hermeneutics, homiletics, and ministry with Dr. Sackett. Each essay covers a topic of scholarly or contemporary interest in the fields of hermeneutics or homiletics. Hermeneutics and homiletics remain topics of discussion in the academy and the church. These essays continue that discussion. The essays overlap th...

The Holy in the Night

Listen for the voice of God. If you approach this Advent season waiting for something—in your life, in your family or community, or in a fractured world—you are not alone. This season reminds us that our waiting is not wasted. Even in our longest nights, divine work endures. What if we were free enough to do the same? Drawing on lectionary scripture readings from the Old and New Testaments and the voices of Black and Brown modern-day prophets, author Shannon Dycus offers reflections for each day of the season. Her meditations stretch open possibilities for faithfulness during silence, ambivalence, doubt, and unknowing. This Advent, accept the invitation to witness and know the presence of God amid waiting. Give voice to freedom, grace, struggle, and beauty—to see again the ways that God emerges in this inward season.

Go to Church, Change the World

In a time when many are questioning the relevance of the church to their spiritual journeys, this book makes a bold case that "going to church" is intrinsic to Christian faith. Drawing on Anabaptist life and conviction, Mast presents Christ's call to all believers to be the church, whether gathered for worship or scattered for service. By exploring such practices as baptism, communion, singing, and group discernment, he asks us to consider how participation in the life of the church shapes our daily witness—how “going to church” transforms “going to work” in the world that God loves.

All can serve to build up the faithful Christian community. As God speaks through these words, the Spirit changes and energizes worshipers.
