On Comitatives and Related Categories
This is the first book-length functional-typologically inspired crosslinguistic study of comitatives and related categories such as the instrumental. On the basis of data drawn from 400 languages world-wide (covering all major phyla and areas), the authors test and revise a variety of general linguistic hypotheses about the grammar and cognitive foundations of comitatives. Text linguistics for the contrastive study of online customer comments
The goal of this corpus based research monograph is twofold. On the one hand, the volume delivers a practice relevant theoretical framework which will enable linguists and internationally operating businesses to evaluate product and service comments of foreign customers written in their mother tongue and intended for their fellow nationals. The theoretical framework should be applicable to any language combination. On the other hand, a large-scale empiric study has been carried out building on our theoretical premises with the aim of determining the text linguistic structure and language use in Spanish, Dutch, French and German customer comments on hotel accommodation in two relevant applications of the Social Web (social network services like Facebook and comments on the webs of hotel reservations agencies). Our findings will enable Spanish and German companies to interpret the linguistic behavior of their German/Spanish clients sharing their accommodation experiences on the Social Web.
Complimenting Behavior and (Self-)Praise across Social Media
The present volume focuses on complimenting behavior, including the awarding of (self-)praise, as manifested on social media. These commonplace activities have been found to fulfil a wide range of functions in face-to-face interaction, discoursal and relational amongst others. However, even though the giving of compliments and praise has become a pervasive practice in online environments, it remains a largely underexplored field of study within pragmatics. Self-praise is an activity that appears at the present time to be rapidly gaining ground online, and the various functions it performs clearly also need further investigation. The different contributions to this ground-breaking volume – 12 in total – aim to address this gap in research by exploring and shedding light on a number of aspects of these phenomena in a range of languages and language varieties. New socio-digital contexts are examined, supported in some cases by social networking sites not previously studied in complimenting behavior research. These include Facebook, Instagram, Renren, Twitter, as well as web forums, message boards and live text commentary.
Repetitions in Gesture
Repetitive sequences play a major role as a pattern-building device and are a basic syntagmatic linguistic means on all language levels in spoken and signed languages. Little attention has been paid to investigating them in multimodal language use. Do gestures exhibit different types of repetitive sequences?
