The completion of the Human Genome Project and the rapid progress in cell bi- ogy and biochemical engineering, are major forces driving the steady increase of approved biotech products, especially biopharmaceuticals, in the market. Today mammalian cell products (“products from cells”), primarily monoclonals, cytokines, recombinant glycoproteins, and, increasingly, vaccines, dominate the biopharmaceutical industry. Moreover, a small number of products consisting of in vitro cultivated cells (“cells as product”) for regenerative medicine have also been introduced in the market. Their efficient production requires comprehensive knowledge of biological as well as biochemical mammalian ce...

This book is specifically about the application of the extremely powerful interaction between the protein avidin or its homologues and the vitamin biotin and some of its homologues. With excellent descriptions of laboratory protocols written by expert researchers, this volume is equally perfect for the student or the professional laboratory scientist.
Many questions related to stem cell properties and neural stem cell lineage and differentiation still linger. This second edition revises and expands upon the successful first edition in order to provide the most current, cutting-edge methods of today for the scientists working to answer these questions. The use of these step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols will allow investigators to produce pure populations that can serve as a means of understanding the biology of neural stem cells and adapting them for transplantation into disease models. This is an excellent source of information and inspiration.
In both vertebrates and invertebrates, Hedgehog signaling regulates the development of the tissues and structures of the body. In addition, many cancers and diseases arise as a result of misregulation of the pathway, which makes it an incredibly important system to understand. This volume examines various methods used in the analysis of the Hedgehog signaling pathway, bringing together different lines of analyses into one accessible and comprehensive text. This volume provides a single source for investigators, presenting several different experimental approaches, which are all varied and broad in nature, as well as procedures for a variety of different model systems. Researchers will find this volume to be an invaluble tool as they work towards deeper understanding of the underlying molecular events that the Hedgehog signaling pathway regulates.
Mammalian cell lines command an effective monopoly for the production of therapeutic proteins that require post-translational modifications. This unique advantage outweighs the costs associated with mammalian cell culture, which are far grater in terms of development time and manufacturing when compared to microbial culture. The development of cell lines has undergone several advances over the years, essentially to meet the requirement to cut the time and costs associated with using such a complex hosts as production platforms. This book provides a comprehensive guide to the methodology involved in the development of cell lines and the cell engineering approach that can be employed to enhanc...
"Synthetic biology" is the label of a new technoscientific field with many different facets and agendas. One common aim is to "create life", primarily by using engineering principles to design and modify biological systems for human use. In a wider context, the topic has become one of the big cases in the legitimization processes associated with the political agenda to solve global problems with the aid of (bio-)technological innovation. Conceptual-level and meta-level analyses are needed: we should sort out conceptual ambiguities to agree on what we talk about, and we need to spell out agendas to see the disagreements clearly. The book is based on the interdisciplinary summer school "Analyzing the societal dimensions of synthetic biology", which took place in Berlin in September 2014. The contributions address controversial discussions around the philosophical examination, public perception, moral evaluation and governance of synthetic biology.
The biopharmaceutical market has come along way since 1982 when the first biopharmaceutical product, recombinant human insulin, was launched. Over 120 such products are currently being marketed around the world including nine blockbuster drugs. The global market for biopharmaceuticals, which is currently valued at US$41 billion, has been growing at an impressive compound annual growth rate of 21% over the previous five years. With over one third of all pipe-line products in active development are biopharmaceuticals, this segment is set to continue outperforming the total pharmaceutical market and could easily reach US$100 billion by the end of this decade.
As innovation processes become increasingly collaborative, new relationships among players in the innovation space emerge. These developments demand new legal structures that allow horizontally integrated, open and shared use of intellectual property (
The way we produce and consume food is facing an unprecedented crisis. As the global population expands, strain is put on our food systems and resources. The agriculture industry is struggling to meet demands of the current population, and the impact of climate change, deforestation, and soil degradation are further threatening our ability to produce food sustainably. Cellular agriculture is an emerging field that has the potential to revolutionize the way we produce food. Cellular Agriculture for Revolutionized Food Production provides an in-depth understanding of cellular agriculture, its history, and its potential to transform the food industry. It explores the benefits of cellular agriculture, including its impact on the environment, animal welfare, and human health. Covering topics such as animal welfare, food production, and regulations, this book is a valuable resource for food industry professionals, environmentalists and sustainability advocates, nutritionists, healthcare professionals, policymakers and regulators, researchers, and academicians.
