An Improved Foundation for the Investigation and Treatment of Gastric Dysrhythmia [PhD Thesis]

An Improved Foundation for the Investigation and Treatment of Gastric Dysrhythmia [PhD Thesis]

Gastric motility disorders remain a complex clinical challenge, and inflict a substantial burden of cost and suffering on society. Gastric contractions are coordinated by an underlying electrical activity, and gastric dysrhythmias are implicated in the pathophysiology of several motility disorders. However, the significance of dysrhythmias remains uncertain, and there are few elective therapies, because current tools to investigate dysrhythmias have low reliability owing to their lack of spatial resolution. This thesis aimed to develop an improved foundation for the investigation and management of gastric dysrhythmia, by advancing and translating high-resolution (HR; multi-electrode) spatiot...

13th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering

th On behalf of the organizing committee of the 13 International Conference on Biomedical Engineering, I extend our w- mest welcome to you. This series of conference began in 1983 and is jointly organized by the YLL School of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Singapore and the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore). First of all, I want to thank Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman A*STAR who kindly agreed to be our Guest of Honour to give th the Opening Address amidst his busy schedule. I am delighted to report that the 13 ICBME has more than 600 participants from 40 countries. We have received very high quality papers and inevitably we had to turndown some papers....

New Advances in Gastrointestinal Motility Research

Research into gastrointestinal motility has received renewed interest in part due to recent advances in the techniques for measuring the structure and function of gastrointestinal cells, tissue and organs. The integration of this wealth of data into biophysically based computation models can aid in interpretation of experimental and clinical measurements and the refinement of measurement techniques. The contents of this book span multiple scales - from cell, tissue, organ, to whole body and is divided into four broad sections covering: i) gastrointestinal cellular activity and tissue structure; (ii) techniques for measuring, analyzing and visualizing high-resolution extra-cellular recordings...

Mathematically Modelling The Electrical Activity Of The Heart: From Cell To Body Surface And Back Again

This book on modelling the electrical activity of the heart is an attempt to describe continuum based modelling of cardiac electrical activity from the cell level to the body surface (the forward problem), and back again (the inverse problem). Background anatomy and physiology is covered briefly to provide a suitable context for understanding the detailed modelling that is presented herein. The questions of what is mathematical modelling and why one would want to use mathematical modelling are addressed to give some perspective to the philosophy behind our approach. Our view of mathematical modelling is broad — it is not simply about obtaining a solution to a set of mathematical equations, but includes some material on aspects such as experimental and clinical validation.

With the New Deal came a dramatic expansion of the American regulatory state. Threatening to undermine many of the traditional roles of the legal system and its actors by establishing a system of administrative law, the new emphasis on federal legislation as a form of social and economic planning ushered in an era of "legal uncertainty." In this study Ronen Shamir explores how elite corporate lawyers and the American Bar Association clashed with academic legal realists over the constitutionality of the New Deal's legislative program. Applying the insights of Weber and Bourdieu to the sociology of the legal profession, Shamir shows that elite members of the bar had a keen self-interest in blo...
