Spitsbergen: Svalbard, Franz Josef, Jan Mayen, 3rd

The Norwegian Arctic archipelago of Spitsbergen (locally referred to as Svalbard) is an antidote to modern-day life. Svalbard: The Bradt Travel Guide introduces ecotravelers to this fascinating part of the world; its intriguing land features, and the magical display of northern lights make it ideal for cruises, wilderness exploration, wildlife watching, and extreme sports. The guide is packed with essential information on travel preparations and local knowledge for those braving the Arctic elements. This guide features: >All the islands of the region that make up Svalbard territory, including Franz Josef Land and the tiny volcanic island of Jan Mayen >Nature and conservation, including polar bears, Arctic foxes, reindeer, and migratory birds >A survival guide to the Arctic with advice on getting outfitted for exploration >Getting there and traveling around, cruise options and internal travel by skidoos and sleds >A wide range of sports, including climbing, hiking, trekking, skiing, riding, and hunting >A background to the climate and geology of the region

PFASs in the Nordic environment

This report describes a screening study of in all ninety-nine conventional and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the Nordic environment. In addition, extractable organic fluorine (EOF) was analysed. The latter can provide the amount, but not identity, of organofluorine in the samples, which in turn can be used to assess the mass balance between known and unknown PFASs. The study was initiated by the Nordic Screening Group and funded by these and the Nordic Council of Ministers through the Chemicals Group.A total of 102 samples were analyzed in this study, including bird eggs, fish, marine mammals, terrestrial mammals, surface water, WWTP effluents and sludge, and air. Samples were collected by institutes from the participating countries and self-governing areas; Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.

Siloxanes in the Nordic Environment

Siloxanes belong to a group of substances used in a number of industrial applications and in consumer products such as additives in fuel, car polish, cleaners, anti foamiers and car waxes. Besides this, they are widely used in e.g. personal care and biomedical products. As a result of their wide use, siloxanes are presumably spread into the environment both via point sources and via diffuse sources and may be found in the environment. Recent studies have suggested that siloxanes may have direct or indirect toxic effects on various biological processes. The aim of this screening study was to obtain a snapshot of the occurrence of siloxanes in the Nordic environment. The here presented screeni...

Next Generation Sequencing in Cancer Research

This volume provides an interdisciplinary perspective of applying Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology to cancer research. It aims to systematically introduce the concept of NGS, a variety of NGS platforms and their practical implications in cancer biology. This unique and comprehensive text will integrate the unprecedented NGS technology into various cancer research projects as opposed to most books which offer a detailed description of the technology. This volume will present true experimental results with concrete data processing pipelines, discuss the bottleneck of each platform for real project in cancer research. In additional, single cancer cell sequencing as the proof of concept will be introduced in this book, along with cutting-edge information provided will help the intended audience to develop a comprehensive understanding of the NGS technology and practical whole genome sequencing data analysis and rapidly translate into their own research, specifically in the field of cancer biology.

Harmonizing Methods for the Determination of Dioxins in Food

Methods for sampling and sample treatment as well as the analytical methodology for determination of dioxin and dioxin-like PCBs in food have been discussed and evaluated at 2 workshops with participation from all Nordic countries. It was found that in general the EU regulation and guidelines for sampling and sample treatment appears to fit their purpose although there is a need for better procedures for the sampling of lots containing fishes of different size or weight. Information on the equipment and analytical methods used by the Nordic dioxin laboratories to measure dioxin and dioxin-like PCB in foodstuffs were compiled through a questionnaire. Together the replies are giving an overview of the analytical capacity in the Nordic countries and they demonstrate that the analytical methodology used by the Nordic dioxin laboratories is in good agreement with the EU guidelines and other international standards and recommendations.

Selected Plasticisers and Additional Sweeteners in the Nordic Environment

The report Selected plasticisers and additional sweeteners in the Nordic Environment describes the findings of a Nordic environmental study. The study has been done as a screening, that is, it provides a snapshot of the occurrence of selected plasticisers and sweeteners, both in regions most likely to be polluted as well as in some very pristine environments. The plasticisers analysed were long chained phthalates and adipates, and the sweeteners analysed were aspartame, cyclamate and sucralose. The purpose of the screening was to elucidate levels and pathways of hitherto unrecognized pollutants. Thus the samples analysed were taken mainly from sewage lines, but also in recipients and biota, both in assumed hot-spot areas and in background areas.

Chiral Environmental Pollutants

This monograph contains a survey on the role of chirality in ecotoxicological processes. The focus is on environmental trace analysis. Areas such as toxicology, ecotoxicology, synthetic chemistry, biology, and physics are also covered in detail in order to explain the different properties of enantiomers in environmental samples. This monograph delivers a comprehensive survey for environmental trace analysts, analytical chemists, ecotoxicologists, food scientists and experienced lab workers.
