The Psychosocial Impacts of Whistleblower Retaliation

This book analyzes the harms related to whistleblower retaliation, its psychosocial impacts on employees, and the institutional dysfunction it creates and perpetuates. Stigma and biases against whistleblowers interfere with their ability to make protected disclosures when harm to others is at stake. Retaliatory toxic tactics create an atmosphere and corporate culture that embodies fear and encourages bystander behavior. In this book, the authors explore psychosocial impacts across domains that include financial, legal, social, physical, and emotional well-being. Ten of the 14 chapters specifically examine the toxic tactics of retaliation: gaslighting, mobbing, marginalizing, shunning, devalu...

Tumor Biology

With the aim of providing an international forum for the communication of both the basic and clinical aspects of molecular and cellular biology of cancer, a NATO ASl was held in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece, September 1-12, 1995. In this diary, Dorothy takes her husband to the hospital because he has a high fever, suffers episodes of fainting and refuses food and drink. She is hoping the doctors will start treatment to lessen the fever and help him eat and regain his strength. None of this happens because the "team" is obsessed with diagnosis. Once there is a diagnosis, all they have to do is go to a computer and find the treatment all ready for them. Besides, various members of the team keep repeating the same tests, unconcerned about whether the patient can tolerate them. Many of these tests are extremely invasive and dangerous. Their obsessive search for a diagnosis bends on OCD. And in the end Dubono drops a bombshell proving their final diagnosis to be wrong any way. Many important observations are expressed concerning our health care system. Worth reading, if you are inclined to think.

Andersonvilles of the North

This study argues that the image of Union prison officials as negligent and cruel to Confederate prisoners is severely flawed. It explains how Confederate prisoners' suffering and death were due to a number of factors, but it would seem that Yankee apathy and malice were rarely among them.

Liver Growth and Repair

Nelson Fausto The Greek myth of Prometheus with its picture of a vulture feasting on its chained victimhas traditionallyprovided a visualimageofliverregeneration. Itis apowerful and frightening representationbut ifone were to substitute the vulture by a surgeon and Prometheus by a patient laying on a properly prepared operating table, the outcomeoftheprocedurewould not differ significantlyfrom that describedbyGreek poets. Yet few of us who work in the field have stopped long enough to ask where this myth originated. Did the poet observe a case of liver regeneration in a human being? Was it brilliant intuition or perhaps, literally, just a 'gut feeling' of a poet looking for good rhymes that ...
