Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has an exceptionally heterogeneous clinical spectrum, ranging from mild disease limited to skin and joints to severe manifestations with renal disorder, central nervous system disease, severe cytopenias and thromboembolic events. Important clinical challenges include the prediction of disease flares and the identification of individuals that are likely to evolve severe disease with accrual of organ damage and worse prognosis. Autoantibodies, i.e. antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), and interferon alpha (IFN-?) that contribute to formation of immune complexes with nuclear antigens, are hallmarks considered to drive the disease...
Abstract: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology, characterized by a wide range of manifestations that can vary from mild to severe or even life-threatening multiple organ system involvement. SLE predominantly affects women and has a peak incidence during women’s reproductive age. Given the complexity of SLE, managing pregnancy in these women is particularly challenging, as the disease itself can impact pregnancy outcomes, and conversely, pregnancy can exacerbate SLE symptoms. This thesis aims to explore pregnancy complications among women with SLE and to assess the feasibility of utilizing specific biomarkers for evaluating the risk of adver...
Presence of autoantibodies is usually a sign of autoimmune disease, although low levels of autoantibodies may also be found in healthy individuals. The discovery of autoantibodies and their associations with autoimmune disease have improved the knowledge of disease mechanisms in autoimmunity as well as clinical diagnostics over the years. Lack of immune tolerance and increased production of antibodies directed against self-antigens may induce or drive autoimmune disease as clearly demonstrated for TSH receptor antibodies in Graves’ disease. Autoantibodies could also be a biomarker of an autoimmune disease, but without distinct pathophysiologic relevance; this could be exemplified by smooth...
Joshua Sofaer works across boundaries, borders and disciplines to create artworks that engage with all levels of society. In cultural institutions or on the street, for art galleries or personal homes, staged as operas or cast as golden sculptures, Sofaer’s work weaves with and through social fabric to consider the ideas that hold us together. Co-published with the Live Art Development Agency, this lavishly illustrated volume is the first in-depth study of the artist’s work, featuring discussions with producers and participants, documentary images and a new photographic essay, interviews with the artist himself, and thirteen commissioned essays by scholars, curators and artists from the ...
Painted Alive is the first collection of bodypainted images by New Orleans artist Craig Tracy. With his masterful approach to this ancient and ephemeral art, Tracy has found the perfect way to passionately express his creativity. More than sixty transformative and intimately provocative works reveal Tracy's vision, which ranges from realistic to conceptual and surreal. In addition to the vibrant finished works captured here, Tracy shares some behind-the-scenes images of his process, which can often be as alluring as the final images. His skillful use of multiple techniques is as varied as the individuals, both male and female, that he paints upon. This monograph challenges the perception of conventional contemporary art and is ideal for anyone who collects, appreciates, and/or studies contemporary art.
This book aims to investigate emerging power quality and stability problems as well as their solutions in more-electronics power systems. The majority of methods presented here are validated through simulation and/or experimental results, thereby improving their credibility. The ultimate objective of these methods is to achieve secured operation of modern power systems with increased (up to 100%) renewable energy penetration, which is an emerging topic in this field. Readers will not only learn about the knowledge of more-electronics power systems but also the step-by-step process of how they can implement this to their research work or industrial practice. This book caters to engineers and academics working in the field of power systems with the main focus of improving power quality and stability.
