HRCT in Interstitial Lung Disease

With the aid of a series of instructive case studies, this book presents the characteristic high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings seen in the group of disorders referred to as interstitial lung disease. The first, introductory part of the book explains the role of the multidisciplinary team in diagnosis and differential diagnosis and discusses basic pulmonary differential diagnosis, radiologic anatomy, and HRCT patterns. The second part is organized according to the four dominant types of HRCT pattern encountered in interstitial lung disease: low attenuation, linear opacities, nodular, and high attenuation. Within this classification, each disorder is introduced using a specific case, with detailed information on patient history, course of the illness, and laboratory and pulmonary function tests. HRCT findings are then presented, together with reflections of the multidisciplinary team, comprising a radiologist, a pulmonologist, and a pathologist. At the end of each case, comments are made on differential diagnosis, highlighting the role of HRCT. The book will be of high value for radiologists and pulmonologists at all levels of experience.

Sine Syndromes in Rheumatology

Sine syndromes (SSs) represent atypical forms of inflammatory rheumatic diseases, the courses of which are often severe. While the diagnosis of rheumatic diseases can be determined according to an established set of diagnostic criteria based on clinical characteristics and laboratory parameters, Sine Syndromes do not fulfill the standard criteria used to assist in the classification of patients with rheumatological disorders. This concise book gives an overview of atypical courses in common inflammatory rheumatic diseases such as Wegener’s granulomatosis, systemic sclerosis, Sjögren's syndrome, or systemic lupus erythematosus. Each chapter reviews similar cases reported in the literature ...

Guidelines on the Management of Latent Tuberculosis Infection

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), defined as a state of persistent immune response to prior-acquired Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens without evidence of clinically manifested active TB, affects about one-third of the world's population. Approximately 10% of people with LTBI will develop active TB disease in their lifetime, with the majority developing it within the first five years after initial infection. Currently available treatments have an efficacy ranging from 60% to 90%. Systematic testing and treatment of LTBI in at-risk populations is a critical component of WHO's eight-point framework adapted from the End TB Strategy to target pre-elimination and, ultimately, el...

Energy Policies of IEA Countries

The Slovak Republic imports virtually all of its natural gas and crude oil from a single supplier, the Russian Federation. Energy security is therefore an overarching concern and priority in the Slovak Republic's energy policy agenda. The government is taking steps to diversify supplies and build on lessons learned from the gas supply disruption in 2009. Enhancing regional co-operation, particularly in the development of gas and electricity interconnections, is an essential step towards meeting the dual policy objectives of enhancing energy security and market competition. The Slovak Republic has moved forward with coupling its electricity market with the Czech Republic's, and supports the c...
