The Collected Letters of Joanna Baillie
Volume two of The Collected Letters of Joanna Baillie features her correspondence with Margaret Holford Hodson, Lady Byron, Mary Montgomery, and Anna Jameson. Other letters reveal her respect and admiration for Sir Walter Scott, as well as her connections to American writers and theologians living in the Boston area in the early-to-mid 1800s. The book includes much of the biographical evidence missing in previous portraits of Joanna Baillie but essential for future critical inquiry.
Liberating Language
This book traces the ways that African Americans learned lessons in rhetoric through language-based activities associated with black survival in nineteenth-century America, such as working in political organizations, reading and publishing newspapers, maintaining diaries, and participating in literary societies. It shows how rhetorical training was manifested through places of worship and military camps, self-education in oratory and elocution, literary societies, and the black press. It also draws on the experiences of various black rhetors of the era, such as Frederick Douglass, Frances Harper, Fanny Coppin, Charles Chesnutt, Ida B. Wells, and the lesser-known Oberlin-educated Mary Virginia Montgomery, Virginia slave preacher "Uncle Jack," and former slave "Mrs. Lee." The book also outlines nontraditional means of acquiring rhetorical skills and demonstrates how African Americans, faced with the lingering consequences of enslavement, acquired rhetorical competence.
Early Georgia Wills and Settlements of Estates, Wilkes County
Wilkes County, Georgia, created in the year 1777, is the parent of Elbert, Oglethorpe, and Lincoln counties and parts of the counties of Greene, Hart, Madison, Taliaferro, and Warren. It comprised one-third of the population of the state in 1790. The records in this excellent little book are supplementary to Mrs. Grace G. Davidson's "Early Records of Georgia: Wilkes County" (1932, 1933) and are designed to assist the researcher in making a detailed survey of the oldest records in the Ordinary's office, once known as the Inferior Court office. The records--principally wills and settlements of estates, but also deeds of gift, inheritances, and marriage bonds--have more than ordinary genealogical significance, as they name not only principals but also beneficiaries (showing relationships), as well as witnesses and executors. The material is mostly of the period dating from the late 18th to the early 19th centuries and identifies nearly 5,000 early Georgians.
