Apoptosis is the regulated form of cell death. It is a complex process defined by a set of characteristic morphological and biochemical features that involves the active participation of affected cells in a self-destruction cascade. This programmed cell death plays a critical role in physiological functions such as cell deletion during embryonic development, balancing cell number in continuously renewing tissues and immune system development. Additionally, a dysregulation of apoptosis is underlying in numerous pathological situations such as Parkinson, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. A number of studies have pointed out an association between consumption of fruits and vegetables, and certain beverages such as tea and wine, which are rich in polyphenols, with reduced risk of chronic diseases, including cancer. Apoptosis is also the regulatory mechanism involved in the removal of unnecessary cells during development and in tissue homeostasis in a wide range of organisms from insects to mammals. This book presents exciting research in this related field.
Molecular Biology of Autophagy and Disease provides an in-depth review of current concepts and applied studies in molecular autophagy and pathology research. Here, more than twenty international contributors examine autophagy in healthy physiological conditions, as well as autophagy in cancer, neurodegenerative disease, unfolded protein response, lung disease, heart disease, viral infections, diabetes, and spinal cord injuries. Each chapter considers past research and ongoing efforts to understand the molecular dynamics of autophagy across these diseases, with emphasis on findings from new and evolving research technology, such as microfluidic techniques and high through-put sequencing. This book connects basic research to clinical translation, opening pathways for new research and application, and uniting common themes around the role of autophagy in cellular biology, biochemistry, and developmental biology.
The four sections of this book cover cell and molecular biology of tumor metabolism, metabolites, tumor microenvironment, diagnostics and epigenetics. Written by international experts, it provides a thorough insight into and understanding of tumor cell metabolism and its role in tumor biology. The book is intended for scientists in cancer cell and molecular biology, scientists in drug and diagnostic development, as well as for clinicians and oncologists.
Prions are disease-causing agents that are neither bacterial nor fungal nor viral and contain no genetic material. A prion is a protein that occurs normally in a harmless form. By folding into an aberrant shape, the normal prion turns into a rogue agent. It then co-opts other normal prions to become rogue prions. Prions have been held responsible for a number of degenerative brain diseases, including scrapie (a fatal disease of sheep and goats), mad cow disease, Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, fatal familial insomnia, kuru, an unusual form of hereditary dementia known as Gertsmann-Straeussler-Scheinker disease, and possibly some cases of Alzheimer's disease. This book presents the latest research in this dynamic field.
The book will discuss the molecular mechanisms of cancer diseases, stem cell proliferation and transformation into cancer cells beyond the physiological processes that occur in normal stem cell biology. Some of the key oncogenic events in cancer and their signaling pathways that regulate cell division cycle progression will be described considering prospects for using such knowledge in advanced cancer therapy. Each chapter shall provide an invaluable resource for information on the most current advances in the field, with discussion of controversial issues and areas of emerging importance
Cancer is a group of different diseases (more than 100) characterised by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Cancer can arise in many sites and behave differently depending on its organ of origin. Significant progress has been made in recent years in the battle against cancer and in understanding its underlying biological mechanisms. This research progress has resulted in many experimental treatments and cures. This book brings together important research from around the world in this frontal field.
This book aims to introduce the reader to the broad concept of management from the content of this book the reader will understand different aspects, such as management functions, skills and problems, environment, and levels of management, but all the sub-topics are related and interconnected since it supports the core concept of the management. In addition to the ideas of the pioneers' scholars of management-initiated principles for managers, and those principles became as main guidelines for the late scholars and practitioners, From the practices and observation of the early management scientist, the principles were developed and introduced as the first organized and theoretical nucleus fo...
