For centuries, historians have narrated the arrival of Europeans using terminology (discovery, invasion, conquest, and colonization) that emphasizes their agency and disempowers that of Native Americans. This book explores firsting, a discourse that privileges European and settler-colonial presence, movements, knowledges, and experiences as a technology of colonization in the early modern Atlantic world, 1492-1900. It exposes how textual culture has ensured that Euro-settlers dominate Native Americans, while detailing misrepresentations of Indigenous peoples as unmodern and proposing how the western world can be un-firsted in scholarship on this time and place.
How did it happen that whole regions of Latin America—Amazonia, Patagonia, the Caribbean—are named for monstrous races of women warriors, big-footed giants and cannibals? Through history, monsters inhabit human imaginings of discovery and creation, and also degeneration, chaos, and death. Latin America’s most dynamic monsters can be traced to archetypes that are found in virtually all of the world's sacred traditions, but only in Latin America did Amazons, cannibals, zombies, and other monsters become enduring symbols of regional history, character, and identity. From Amazons to Zombies presents a comprehensive account of the qualities of monstrosity, the ways in which monsters function within and among cultures, and theories and genres of the monstrous. It describes the genesis and evolution of monsters in the construction and representation of Latin America from the Ancient world and early modern Iberia to the present.

With this latest installment, Nelly Sfeir v. de Gonzalez has completed her triology of bibliographies on Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Born in Colombia in 1927, Garcia Marquez has become one of the most outstanding and influential novelists of the 20th century. He has received numerous awards, including the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature. His work has generated an enormous amount of scholarship and his writings are part of the curricula taught in most American colleges and universities. This third volume presents a comprehensive annotated bibliography of books, articles, and non-print materials by and about Garcia Marquez published between 1992 and 2002. The first part consists of primary sources by Garcia Marquez, while, the second part brings together entries for secondary sources, including reviews.

Este libro reúne los resultados de investigación presentados en el simposio Redes, alianzas y afinidades: escritura de mujeres en América Latina, siglos xix y xx (Bogotá, Universidad de los Andes, 2 a 4 de noviembre de 2011), organizado por la Universidad de los Andes y la Universidad de Chile y coordinado por las compiladoras.1 El simposio fue organizado en homenaje a la escritora colombiana Montserrat Ordóñez (1941-2001), investigadora, escritora, poeta, traductora y editora que, como las mujeres reunidas en esta publicación, supo que el lugar de las mujeres en la escritura se elabora, sostiene y expande sobre un gran tejido de redes que hacen posible ese lugar y su sentido. Este libro quiere que la red académica que hizo posible la realización del simposio se conserve en el tiempo, así como contribuir al fortalecimiento de la red de estudios latinoamericanos, en particular los literarios y de género.
