Marxism and the Failure of Organised Socialism in Spain, 1879-1936
This is the first full-length study in English of the role of Marxist theory in the Spanish Socialist movement prior to the outbreak of Civil War in 1936. In particular, the author stresses the intellectual poverty of this aspect of leftwing politics in Spain. In concentrating on the Partido Socialista Obrero Espafiol (PSOE), the major organised party of the left prior to the Civil War, the study seeks to achieve two main aims: first, to attempt to isolate the political, social and intellectual factors which led to a particularly distorted version of Marxism which became established in Spain at the end of the nineteenth century; and second, to demonstrate how this particular conception of Marxism had a crucial negative impact on the political formulations and fortunes of the PSOE between 1879 and 1936. The central argument of the book is that the significance of Spanish Marxism lay precisely in its poverty, since it was this 'decaffeinated' version of the theory which set the parameters within which the PSOE formulated its strategy for socialism.

Social Alternatives in Southern Europe and Latin America
This book deals with the evolution of initiatives connected to the social and solidarity economy and their political cultures and educational implications in the south of Europe and in Latin America. Employing a comparative perspective, the contributors present 11 studies of these trajectories in Argentina, Chile, Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, and Catalonia in order to engender familiarity with social tributary practices and projects in the Latin world. As the cyclical crises of capitalism and their resulting inequalities have created proposals of reform and brought them into action, certain shared ideological influences and policies have emerged across these societies. In War and Revolution in Catalonia, 1936-1939, Pelai Pagès i Blanch analyses the political and military evolution of the events in Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War: the street battles that defeated the military rebellion; the social revolution that pervaded all levels of Catalonia's politics, economy, and culture; the gradual erosion of workers' power, culminating in the May Events; and Catalonia's eventual fall to Franco's forces. Pagès i Blanch demonstrates the extent to which the war was lost when the Republican leaders, in order to ‘unify’ the left against Franco and fascism, turned their backs on the social revolution. Cultura y política del anarquismo en España e Iberoamérica
Este libro propone estudiar la gestación de ricas y variadas manifestaciones culturales que otorgaron al anarquismo y a sus militantes un perfil propio. La cultura libertaria entretejió procesos ideológicos y prácticas políticas y organizativas con costumbres, ritos, lenguajes y símbolos y éstos a su vez con discursos, imaginarios y sociabilidades estrechamente imbricados con la comunidad y la clase. Todo ello se difundió en medios tan diversos como las artes gráficas, los impresos, la educación, los congresos, la música, el teatro y las actividades de esparcimiento, entre otros. Los trabajos aquí reunidos examinan esa cultura desde su gestación en España y su desarrollo en Iberoamérica hasta los años de la primera Guerra Mundial. Con base en diversas fuentes documentales y hemerográficas, los autores han estudiado la complejidad, la riqueza y a menudo las contradicciones que surcan el desarrollo del anarquismo en el mundo ibérico. En este sentido, esta obra demuestra la posibilidad de consolidar una nueva agenda de investigación sobre aspectos menos conocidos del anarquismo en España e Iberoamérica.
