30 Jahre nachdem Félix Guattari den Begriff des Postmassenmedialen als notwendige Bedingung medialer Teilhabe eingeführt hat, wirkt er weiterhin in den Arbeiten nachfolgender Generationen nach. Dass ein Konzept, das auf politisches Geschehen und technische Entwicklungen bis hin zur Zäsur von 1989 reagiert, noch heute den wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs beschäftigt, ist jedoch nicht selbstverständlich. Diese Ausgabe der AugenBlick, die im Umfeld der DFG-Forscher:innengruppe Mediale Teilhabe entstanden ist, unterstreicht die Notwendigkeit, aufmerksam die sich wandelnden Formen politischer und künstlerischer Partizipation im sogenannten "postmedialen Zeitalter" zu betrachten. Die hier versammelten Beiträge formulieren dabei keine Medientheorie der Ermöglichung von Teilhabe. Viel eher tritt das Postmassenmediale selbst als eine Frage der Teilhabe hervor, die in sich medial begriffen werden muss. Dieser Rahmen erlaubt es, das Postmassenmediale in unserer gegenwärtigen techno-politischen Situation zu verorten. So tritt es uns in Arbeiten zu Videospielen, dokumentarischen Projekten, YouTube, Ästhetik und Ethik des Politischen und in Meditationen zur Pandemie entgegen

TechnoScienceSociety
This book introduces the term of TechnoScienceSociety to focus on the ongoing technological reconfigurations of science and society. It aspires to use the breadth of Science and Technology Studies to perform a critical diagnosis of our contemporary culture. Instead of constructing technology as society’s “other”, the book sets out to highlight the both complex and ambivalent entanglements of technologies, sciences and socialities. It provides some tentative steps towards a diagnosis of a society in which individuals and organizations address themselves, their pasts, presents, futures, hopes and problems in technoscientific modes. Technosciences redesign matter, life, self and society. However, they do not operate independently: Technoscientific practices are deeply socially and culturally constituted. The diverse contributions highlight the ongoing technological reconfigurations of rationalities, infrastructures, modes of governance, and publics. The book aims to inspire scholars and students to think and analyze contemporary conditions in new ways drawing on, and expanding, the toolkits of Science and Technology Studies.
The Participant
Participation is everywhere today. It has been formalized, measured, standardized, scaled up, network-enabled, and sent around the world. Platforms, algorithms, and software offer to make participation easier, but new technologies have had the opposite effect. We find ourselves suspicious of how participation extracts our data or monetizes our emotions, and the more procedural participation becomes, the more it seems to recede from our grasp. In this book, Christopher M. Kelty traces four stories of participation across the twentieth century, showing how they are part of a much longer-term problem in relation to the individual and collective experience of representative democracy. Kelty argues that in the last century or so, the power of participation has dwindled; over time, it has been formatted in ways that cramp and dwarf it, even as the drive to participate has spread to nearly every kind of human endeavor, all around the world. The Participant is a historical ethnography of the concept of participation, investigating how the concept has evolved into the form it takes today. It is a book that asks, "Why do we participate?" And sometimes, "Why do we refuse?"

This volume unravels the debates on the »Participation Age«: Instead of perpetuating visions of social »all-inclusion« or the »digital divide«, the collection reclaims collectivity as an effect of technological and historical conditions. Thinking of participation both as promise and duty, the contributions analyse the attractions and impositions connected to the socio-technical formation of collectivities. The constraints of participation are addressed by focusing on the mutual shaping of user practices and technological environments. It is hence a relational thinking that allows specifying the manifold interconnections of technology, practices and discourses.

Um diese digitalen Kulturen zu beschreiben, entwickeln medienwissenschaftliche Arbeiten Theorien einer Welt im Fluss. Dabei erliegen ihre Diagnosen oftmals einem Technikfetisch und vernachlässigen gesellschaftliche Strukturen. Mathias Denecke legt eine systematische Kritik dieser Theoriebildung vor. Dazu zeichnet er die Geschichte der Rede von strömenden Informationen in der Entwicklung digitaler Computer nach und diskutiert, wie der Begriff für Gegenwartsbeschreibungen produktiv gemacht werden kann.
