How has migration shaped Mediterranean history? And what role did conflicting temporalities and the politics of departure play in the age of decolonisation? Using a microhistorical approach, Migration at the End of Empire explores the experiences of over 55,000 Italian subjects in Egypt during the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Before 1937, Ottoman-era legal regimes fostered the coupling of nationalism and imperialism among Italians in Egypt, particularly as the fascist government sought to revive the myth of Mare Nostrum. With decolonisation, however, Italians began abandoning Egypt en masse. By 1960, over 40,000 had deserted Egypt; some as 'emigrants,' others as 'repatriates,'and still others as 'national refugees.' The departed community became an emblem around which political actors in post-colonial Italy and Egypt forged new ties. Anticipated, actual, and remembered departures of Italians from Egypt are at the heart of this book's ambition to rethink European and Mediterranean periodisation.
We are often told that our world is a world of transnational communities and diasporas. Western states confronted with massive emigration have long been trying to keep in touch, and control, the ones who left, and nurtured networks of information and identities. Ilaving long identified migrants as immigrants, we do learn a lot through these pages, looking at them as emigrants. Transporting concepts like diaspora or transnationalism into the past also lead us to wonder what was exactly new about such things as transnationalism and the multiplication of diasporas. ls it the world we live in, or the tools we use to describe it, or a bit of both ? Dealing with different people, different times, from 1820 to 1990, and different places, the five historians gathered here challenge some of the assumptions of contemporary discourses. They use parts of a theoretical framework designed to identify and name what is new and unprecedented in our world to shed light on previous migrant experiences and it actually works.

Imperial Odessa: Peoples, Spaces, Identities is a book about a cosmopolitan city written by a cosmopolitan scholar with a literary flair. Evrydiki Sifneos conceives Odessa as more of a fin-de siècle east Mediterranean port-metropolis than as a provincial port-city of the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century due to two of its principal characteristics: its function as a hub of international trade and travel, and the multi-ethnic character of its inhabitants. The book unfolds around two interpenetrating axes. The first one introduces a new "peripatetic" approach that discovers the space of the city; and the other, the one that has given it its dynamic, is the socio-economic transformations that germinated within the political changes.
