In a thorough comparison, they show how both presidents used historical analogies to evaluate information, relied on instinct to formulate decisions, and drew on moral language to justify their choices.

Surgeons at War

Kaufman examines the training and status of British military surgeons during the late 18th and 19th centuries. Their management of the sick and wounded during the wars with France leading up to and including the Peninsular War is also described. He concludes with an analysis of the medical problems associated with the Crimean War. Using important contemporary texts, Kaufman describes the personalities who served in the British Army Medical Department during the late 18th and 19th centuries, when diseases caused a much higher mortality than injuries sustained in battle. Many military surgeons were only poorly trained, and the management of the sick and wounded only gradually improved over thi...

Horace Kallen Confronts America

During his more than fifty-year writing career, American Jewish philosopher Horace Kallen (1882–1974) incorporated a deep focus on science into his pragmatic philosophy of life. He exemplified the hope among Jews that science would pave the way to full and equal integration. In this intellectual biography, Kaufman explores Kallen’s life and illuminates how American scientific culture inspired not only Kallen’s thought but also that of an entire generation. Kaufman reveals the ways in which Kallen shaped the direction of discussions on race, ethnicity, modernism, and secularism that influenced the American Jewish community. An ardent secularist, Kallen was also a serious religious thinker whose Jewish identity, as unique and idiosyncratic as it was, exemplifies the modern responsiveness to the moral ideal of "authenticity." Kaufman shows how one man’s quest for authenticity contributed to a gradual shift in Jewish self-perception in America and how, in turn, his struggle led to America’s embrace of Kallen’s well-known term "cultural pluralism."

Transform Your Computer Monitor into a Virtual Microscope The world's leading expert on mouse embryology, Dr. Matthew Kaufman is responsible for producing classic texts that are considered the most respected in the field. While the quality of their photowork at the time was considered state-of-the-art, the technology available when the books were produced limited the original printed pages to black-and-white photomicrographs and line diagrams, which are too small and not detailed enough to meet the requirements of today's mouse pathologists who demand high resolution, high detailed full color slides. Meeting this need and going beyond, Histologic Basis of Mouse Endocrine System Development: ...

The significance of the Regius Chair of Military Surgery that existed in the University of Edinburgh from 1806–55 is discussed in detail for the first time in this book. The first holder, John Thomson, also held the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Chair of Surgery from 1804. This Regius Chair was the only one of its type in Britain for almost 50 years, and was established during the Peninsular War. After the second holder, Sir George Ballingall, died in 1855, the Government withdrew its funding support. This Chair introduced numerous Edinburgh medical students to Military Surgery, and many who attended subsequently entered the Medical Service of either the Army, Navy or East India Company. Large numbers of medical officers in the Public service also attended. These courses were popular, and the topics covered were not discussed elsewhere in the Edinburgh medical curriculum.
