Matthias Jacob Schleiden gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Biologen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Bekannt ist er als Mitbegruender der Zellenlehre und als streitbarer Kampfer fuer die Konzeption einer neuen sich induktiv und analytisch verstehenden Naturwissenschaft. Hier werden nun erstmals seine anthropologischen Schriften ediert. Schleiden setzte die evolutionsbiologische Konzeption Darwins als einer der Ersten auch fuer die Anthropologie um und verstand die Kulturentwicklung des Menschen als Fortschreibung seiner biologischen Evolution. Vor 1850 las Schleiden seine Anthropologie nach J. Mueller und J. F. Fries. Er begriff sie aber schon hier als Naturwissenschaft. Seine Rezeption des Darwinismus setzte insoweit in einer schon physiologisch bestimmten Anthropologie an. Hierin markiert Schleiden den Diskussionsstand seiner Zeit.
