Pragmatics of Space
This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of spatial configurations of language use and of language use in space. It consists of four parts. The first part covers the various practices of describing space through language, including spatial references in spoken interaction or in written texts, the description of motion events as well as the creation of imaginative spaces in storytelling. The second part surveys aspects of the spatial organization of face-to-face communication including not only spatial arrangements of small groups in interaction but also the spatial dimension of sign language and gestures. The third part is devoted to the communicative resources of constructed spaces and the ways in which these facilitate and shape communication. Part four, finally, is devoted to pragmatics across space and cultures, i.e. the ways in which language use differs across language varieties, languages and cultures.
Handbook of Management Communication
Management communication encompasses a wide range of practices that define modern organizations. Those practices are, in many respects, constituted, formed and contextualized by the use of language. This handbook traces the theoretical modelling of these practices by contemporary research. It explores their linguistic features and performance in specific situations of value creation and in various modes. Cold War Games
Zwischen Computerspielen und Kaltem Krieg besteht eine enge Verbindung. Nicht nur entstammen die technischen Grundlagen des Mediums den Technologien des Systemkonfliktes. Seit seinen frühesten Tagen hatte das Unterhaltungsmedium auch etwas dazu zu sagen, was der Kalte Krieg war und bedeutete. In einer Reihe von exemplarischen Analysen beleuchtet diese Studie, wie Computerspiele ihren medienspezifischen Beitrag zur Konstruktion des Kalten Krieges im historischen Kontext der letzten Phase des Systemkonflikts leisteten. Sie erwiesen sich dabei als Übersetzer von Spezialwissen des Kalten Krieges in die Populärkultur und als diskursive Gratwandler zwischen Simulation und Spiel. Die Studie leistet damit einen Beitrag zum Verständnis von Computerspielen als kulturgeschichtliche Quellen.
Data Integration in the Life Sciences
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Data Integration in the Life Sciences, DILS 2005, held in San Diego, CA, USA in July 2005. Institutionen - von der Schule über Behörden und Organisationen bis hin zur Gesundheitsversorgung - stellen gesellschaftliche Apparate dar, die ein Potenzial haben, mehrsprachige Praxen zu implementieren oder aber monolinguale Praxen zu verstetigen. Seit den späten 1970er-Jahren untersucht die funktional-pragmatische Sprach- und Kommunikationsanalyse, kurz Funktionale Pragmatik (FP), das sprachliche Handeln in mehrsprachigen Gesellschaften und ihren Institutionen. Von Konrad Ehlich und Jochen Rehbein als integrale Handlungstheorie von Sprache entwickelt, haben sich funktional-pragmatische Fragestellungen und Analysen vielfältig und über Sprachgrenzen hinweg entfaltet. While suggesting easy living with smart devices, these assistants are criticized as the next step of corporate and state surveillance of the private home, or as harbingers of new and simplified linguistic practices. The contributors to this volume focus on the transformation and persistence of everyday linguistic, media and data practices under platformized conditions and new interfaces. This collection thus brings together perspectives from media sociology, media studies, media linguistics and domestication research.
A Linguistic Overview of WhatsApp Communication
Digital discourse has become a widespread way of communicating worldwide, WhatsApp being one of the most popular Instant Messaging tools. This book offers a critical state-of-the-art review of WhatsApp linguistic studies. After evaluating a wide range of sources, seeking to identify relevant works, two major thematic domains were found. On the one hand, references addressing WhatsApp linguistic characteristics: status notifications, multimodal elements such as emojis or memes, language variation, among others. On the other, the volume offers an overview of references describing the use of WhatsApp to learn English as a foreign or second language (EFL/ESL). The author provides a broad critical review of previous works to date, which has enabled her to detect areas of research still unexplored.
