The Ceramic Narrative is an exploration of past and present ceramic iconography concerned with the depiction of narratives, or with images meant to be thought-provoking, beyond the merely decorative. The book is beautifully illustrated with an extensive variety of work from history and the present day, showing how many contemporary artists continue this tradition with modern interpretations. Examining ancient Greece, the ceramic imagery of the Maya culture, the ceramics of China, Persia, and Japan, European tin-glaze traditions, and the narrative imagery appearing on later European porcelains, Matthias Ostermann attempts wherever possible not only to present ceramic narratives in their cultu...

Conceived as a workshop in print, this book guides the reader through some of the conceptual, material and technical concerns in producing new Maiolica. This is a tin-glazed earthenware which has a long tradition and for many, the term still conjures up the image of historical delftware and European faience.
Time and matter are the most fundamental concepts in physics and in any science-based description of the world around us. Quantum theory has, however, revealed many novel insights into these concepts in non-relativistic, relativistic and cosmological contexts. The implications of these novel perspectives have been realized and, in particular, probed experimentally only recently. In the papers in this proceedings, these issues are discussed in a truly interdisciplinary fashion from philosophical and historical perspectives. The leading contributors, including Nobel laureates T W H'nsch and G t' Hooft, address both experimental and theoretical issues.
Crafting New Traditions: Canadian Innovators and Influences brings together the work of eleven historians and craftspeople to address the two questions of “who has influenced the recent history of Canadian studio craft?” and “who will be considered as the ‘pioneers’ of Canadian craft in the future?”
