In establishing a professorship in Design & Politics at Delft University of Technology, the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment has launched a program of education, research and practice for the spatial design of the Netherlands, aimed at reinforcing the interaction between design and politics. This open access book presents a selection of the best contributions to the Digital Cities 9 Workshop held in Limerick in 2015, combining a number of the latest academic insights into new collaborative modes of city making that are firmly rooted in empirical findings about the actual practices of citizens, designers and policy makers. It explores the affordances of new media technologies for empowering citizens in the process of city making, relating examples of bottom-up or participatory practices to reflections about the changing roles of professional practitioners in the processes, as well as issues of governance and institutional policymaking.
This book highlights state-of-the-art research findings on floating developments in both inland and coastal waters with focus on living, recreation and working offshore. Architectural research is being redefined in practice. Whereas once the value of a piece of research was solely measured by the number of citations it received by fellow academics, shifting funding models and new societal concerns are forcing academia to question its structure and this mode of evaluation. In Mallparks, Michael T. Friedman observes that as cathedrals represented power relations in medieval towns and skyscrapers epitomized those within industrial cities, sports stadiums exemplify urban American consumption at the turn of the twenty-first century. Grounded in Henri Lefebvre and George Ritzer's spatial theories in their analyses of consumption spaces, Mallparks examines how the designers of this generation of baseball stadiums follow the principles of theme park and shopping mall design to create highly effective and efficient consumption sites. In his exploration of these contemporary cathedrals of sport and consumption, Friedman discusses the history of stadium design, the amenities and aesthetics of stadium spaces, and the intentions and conceptions of architects, team officials, and civic leaders. He grounds his analysis in case studies of Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore; Fenway Park in Boston; Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles; Nationals Park in Washington, DC; Target Field in Minneapolis; and Truist Park in Atlanta.

Het compactestadbeleid is in Nederland ongeveer een kwart eeuw oud. Het werd gedreven door de vier grote steden in de Randstad, die zich na de economische crises van de jaren zeventig en het gevoerde (gebundeld) deconcentratiebeleid geconfronteerd zagen met een enorm verlies aan midden- en hogere inkomensgroepen. Tegelijkertijd ontstonden nieuwe inzichten over het belang van krachtige steden in de opkomende mondiale netwerkeconomie. In combinatie daarmee kwamen ook duurzaamheid, mobiliteit en kwaliteit van het landelijk gebied in relatie tot die stedelijke opgave op de agenda. Vanuit die achtergrond werd het compactestadbeleid vanaf midden jaren tachtig op nationaal niveau geformaliseerd. De doorgezette mondialisering, informatisering, de veranderende economie en het toenemend belang van duurzame ruimtelijke ontwikkeling vragen om een hernieuwde invulling van compactestadbeleid. De actuele setting is wezenlijk anders dan die van zo'n kwart eeuw geleden.
