Twenty Years A-Growing

This is the story of a boy's growing up on the Great Blasket, a sparsely inhabited, Gaelic-speaking island off the coast of Ireland. It tells of the simple life of a society that no longer exists, with a humor and poetry refreshingly remote from the modern world that replaced it.

"Arms, and the Man I sing . . ."

This study referred to as a "preface" is given this designation because its basic aim is not to offer an up-to-date overall assessment of Dryden's translation of Virgil's Æneid but, rather, to provide a relevant basis for such an assessment ?thus allowing for a wide range of readership. The relevance of this approach rests on two basic premises: that of R. A. Brower, who maintains "that no translation can be understood or properly evaluated apart from the conditions of expression under which it was made," supported by Dryden's expressed intention "to make Virgil speak such English, as he wou'd himself have spoken, if he had been born in England, and in this present age," together providing a genuinely relevant basis for an understanding of Dryden's translation, "the conditions of expression" here allowing the inclusion of all the possible implications this phrase includes.

In Our Own Image: Fictional Representations of William Shakespeare

  • Categories: Art

This publication looks at fictional portrayals of William Shakespeare with a focus on novels, short stories, plays, occasional poems, films, television series and even comics. In terms of time span, the analysis covers the entire twentieth century and ends in the present-day. The authors included range from well-known figures (G.B. Shaw, Kipling, Joyce) to more obscure writers. The depictions of Shakespeare are varied to say the least, with even interpretations giving credence to the Oxfordian theory and feminist readings involving a Shakespearian sister of sorts. The main argument is that readings of Shakespeare almost always inform us more about the particular author writing the specific work than about the historical personage.

Shakespeare Plays the Classroom

Bringing Shakespeare to the Sunshine State, this book gathers together a talented group of teachers, choreographers, directors, set designers, musicians, costumers, actors, and artists to discuss how they have adapted the bard's monologues in Miami, assassinated Julius Caesar on the steps of Tallahassee's Capitol, trained students to duel in Florida's Panhandle, placed Shylock on trial in Orlando, and transformed Gainesville into Puck's magical forest. This guide for teachers and lovers of literature and theater is an original collection of essays exploring the idea that Shakespeare's plays are best approached playfully through performance. Based on their wide-ranging experience as theater p...
