"This book is about involving and engaging urban poor communities in one of the first steps of any participatory planning or upgrading initiative. It describes how we can use 'participatory enumerations, ' a surveying method used to gain better knowledge of the needs and priorities of the community. It presents and analyses existing and novel applications of participatory enumerations to enhance tenure security and improve urban land management."--Publisher's description.
Spectacle 2.0 recasts Debord's theory of spectacle within the frame of 21st century digital capitalism. It offers a reassessment of Debord’s original notion of Spectacle from the late 1960s, of its posterior revisitation in the 1990s, and it presents a reinterpretation of the concept within the scenario of contemporary informational capitalism and more specifically of digital and media labour. It is argued that the Spectacle 2.0 form operates as the interactive network that links through one singular (but contradictory) language and various imaginaries, uniting diverse productive contexts such as logistics, finance, new media and urbanism. This book focuses on the phenomenon of art intervention—an expression of local initiatives by artists, collectives, and art centers wishing to influence the design of the space or make a change in its lifestyle. These are reflected in acts such as squatting in abandoned buildings, restoring and redistributing them according to principles of social justice; mapping the city based on alternative parameters, such as revealing venues of collective memory or exposing the city's backyard; creating outdoor urban art galler...
In recent years, mega-events as Olympics, international exhibitions and especially the World Cup have put into action all kinds of capitals, reconfigured territorial scales of power and produced a discourse about competitiveness, urbanism and global cities that proclaims convergence between public and private interests.

The focus of this book is the influence of mega-events in the transformation of image construction practices in their host cities. It uses the idea of urban image construction as a lens through which to examine the spectacles of mega-events, with chapters exploring different themes that compose the imagineering process. The physical and social dimensions of these spectacles are addressed, as is the emerging resistance to controversial initiatives. The book explores the unique conditions of mega-event hosting by employing a political-economy point of view and focusing the analytical lenses on Rio de Janeiro and Beijing, two recent Olympic host cities with immense social inequalities.
