Organization design and its impact on the digital innovation process and the digital innovation outcome

The book has the objective to demystify the hyper-complex world of organization design and digital innovation. It shows how organization design as a management discipline can help organizations to better master digital innovation challenges. At the same time, it discusses how organization design frameworks need to be further developed to successfully act as a driver for innovation in a digital world. While the digital age brings tremendous new opportunities, it also brings the specific challenge that companies' organization designs must be adjusted. This book shows how companies organize for innovation in the digital world by presenting thirteen practical cases from various industries.

Steps towards a Mindful Organisation

This book presents a guideline for turning any organisation into a more mindful one, allowing it to manage unexpected events and develop stronger resilience. The author conducted empirical research with a German IT company’s staff and its leadership in a longitudinal way. The whole team was trained in individual mindfulness competencies. Individual mindfulness is a state of being that can be developed through mindfulness mediation. When combined with social interactions, cultural adaptations and structural changes, collective mindfulness develops. Collective mindfulness allows an organisation to become more agile. The author argues that mindfulness training influences the openness and knowledge-sharing behaviour of an organisation, first on an individual and then a collective level. Such training can generate awareness, increase empathy between the team members, and lead towards a more successful organisation. This study can inspire team managers to improve the work environment as well as academics to update their current level of research in the field of individual and collective mindfulness.

Dragan Djurić looks at strategy tools from a process-ontological worldview as proposed by the Process Organization Studies discourse. Building on Wittgenstein’s later philosophy he understands science and management as language games thereby developing a view of strategy tools as objects with both an ontological and a symbolic function. This perspective is contrasted with the traditional understanding of strategy tools as ‘technologies of rationality’ as well as with the practice-based view of strategy tools as ‘boundary objects’.

Challenges Resulting from Multiple Institutional Logics in Hybrid Organizations

Hybrid organizations combine elements of well-established, institutionalized structures and thereby move away from conventional organizational practices. The present research reveals that when hybrid organizations develop their operations, they are faced with challenges that are unique and unexplored and which are often grounded in their hybrid structure. Social business hybrids were chosen as an ideal setting for the study of organizational hybridity based on their unique organizational structure, which is characterized by a mix of commercial for-profit and charity logic.

Today, companies are more than ever dependent on a highly motivated workforce and hard-working employees. The purpose of this book is to expand the conceptual boundaries of work effort (WE) in order to gain critical insights into what makes people work hard. In spite of the acknowledged importance of WE, the concept was hitherto weakly understood, inconsistently defined, and lacked a clear conceptualization due to a lack of theoretical and empirical research. At theoretical level, this dissertation enhances the understanding of the WE concept, notably with respect to its antecedents. At practical level, the refined understanding will increase the leaders’ ability to impact and manage their employees’ WE levels.

Gorazd Ocvirk creates a comprehensive model for the strategic management of market niches, and provides a framework for the construction of a strategic management theory of market niches. Based on the current state of research on the niche topic within, strategic management has many niche typologies but no clear common methodological and theoretical framework on which to lean on. This model has remained absent from the market niche research in the field of strategic management and has led to a state of conceptual ambiguity of the field.

Creating Balance?

This collection maps the increasingly extensive discussion of work-life issues for professionals and discusses key aspects in depth. What is work-life integration? What are the specific challenges for professionals? How do they manage their blurred work-life boundaries? Ho...
