The Seductions of Pilgrimage explores the simultaneously attractive and repellent, beguiling and alluring forms of seduction in pilgrimage. It focuses on the varied discursive, imaginative, and practical mechanisms of seduction that draw individual pilgrims to a pilgrimage site; the objects, places, and paradigms that pilgrims leave behind as they embark on their hyper-meaningful travel experience; and the often unforeseen elements that lead pilgrims off their desired course. Presenting the first comprehensive study of the role of seduction on individual pilgrims in the study of pilgrimage and tourism, it will appeal to scholars of anthropology, cultural geography, tourism, heritage, and religious studies.

Political Leadership and Erdoğan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has dominated the country’s politics for more than two decades. To answer the question how one man was able to remain popular for such a long period of time, it is necessary to understand his leadership secrets. In Political Leadership and Erdoğan, former cabinet minister and long-time Erdoğan aide Yalçın Akdoğan provides valuable insights into the Turkish president’s leadership profile and explains how he relates to centuries-old theories of leadership in Turkish and Islamic thought. This book is appropriate for political scientists, international relations experts, practitioners and historians as well as scholars of Turkey, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. It is also intended to supplement courses in leadership development, political communication and public relations theory.

How Happy to Call Oneself a Turk

The modern nation-state of Turkey was established in 1923, but when and how did its citizens begin to identify themselves as Turks? Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkey's founding president, is almost universally credited with creating a Turkish national identity through his revolutionary program to "secularize" the former heartland of the Ottoman Empire. Yet, despite Turkey's status as the lone secular state in the Muslim Middle East, religion remains a powerful force in Turkish society, and the country today is governed by a democratically elected political party with a distinctly religious (Islamist) orientation. In this history, Gavin D. Brockett takes a fresh look at the formation of Turkish ...

Wheat Landraces

Landraces possess a very large genetic base in population structure and are dynamic populations of cultivated plants with historical origin, distinct identity, and without any formal crop improvement. They are often genetically diverse, locally adapted, and associated with traditional farming systems. Resistance genes to biotic and abiotic stress factors, which are especially diversified in landraces, are of great interest to plant breeders, faced with global climate challenge. In addition, gene pools made of different landraces grown in different ecological conditions can be used for wheat breeding to enhance quality; yield and other desirable agricultural parameters. An estimated 75% of the genetic diversity of crop plants was lost in the last century due to the replacement of high yielding modern varieties. There is, thus, an urgent need to preserve existing species, not only for posterity but also as a means to secure food supply for a rising world population. In this book, we provide an overview of wheat landraces with special attention to genetic diversities, conservation, and utilization.

Ancient Wheats

Wheat (Triticum L.), an annual herbaceous plant in Poacae (Gramineae) family, settles in the Triticeae (Hordeae) subfamily. The grasses (Poaceae Barnhart) are the fifth largest (monocotyledonous flowering) plant family and of great importance for human civilization and life. Cereal crops such as maize, wheat, rice, barley, and millet are the domesticated ones in the family. It is still the most vital economical plant family in modern times, providing food, forage, building materials (bamboo, thatch), and fuel (ethanol). Wheat has many accessions in national and international gene banks. The estimated number of wheats by FAO in 2010 is 856,000, and, followed by rice (774,000), and barley (467...

Cosmopolitical Claims

When both France and Holland rejected the proposed constitution for the European Union in 2005, the votes reflected popular anxieties about the entry of Turkey into the European Union as much as they did ambivalence over ceding national sovereignty. Indeed, the votes in France and Holland echoed long standing tensions between Europe and Turkey. If there was any question that tensions were high, the explosive reaction of Europe’s Muslim population to a series of cartoons of Mohammed in a Danish newspaper put them to rest. Cosmopolitical Claims is a profoundly original study of the works of Sten Nadonly, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Feridun Zaimoglu, and 2006 Nobel prize in literature recipient Orh...

Selahattin Ülkümen, the Turkish Righteous among the Nations

The history of the Holocaust is far from complete. Even with more than seven decades of Holocaust research and writing behind us, there are many specialist topics within Holocaust historiography that have not been dealt with in detail, including the role of Turkey. This has caused the researchers of the Holocaust in other countries to often include limited, outdated, and sometimes incorrect data about Turkey in their studies. Within the flood of publications on Holocaust history that has been rising since the 1990s, and which has maintained its momentum ever since, studies on the role of Turkey remain comparatively underexplored. Selahattin Ülkümen, a Turk, is the only Muslim diplomat who ...
