Privacy

Privacy, or being free from being observed or disturbed by others, is a right that we often take for granted. The daily lifestyle of a teenager is filled with issues that they often just want to work out themselves, in private. This volume explores the real and perceived teen rights related to privacy issues. Readers will evaluate whether a student's right to privacy is more restricted than an adult's right to privacy, and the impact of blank parental consent requirements and parental involvement laws. Also discussed are school searches of students and their lockers, and student drug testing.

Dispatches from the Abortion Wars

From the Publisher: Surprising firsthand accounts from the front lines of abortion provision reveal the persistent cultural, political, and economic hurdles to access. More than thirty-five years after women won the right to legal abortion, stories of limited access to abortion are still familiar; yet most people have little idea of just how inaccessible it has become. While a majority of Americans support safe and legal abortion, the pervasive stigma-cultivated by the religious right-continues to shame women and marginalize abortion providers in their own professional communities. Reproductive-health researcher Carole Joffe has studied abortion provision for more than thirty years. In Dispa...

Network Aesthetics

  • Categories: Art

Even as "network" has become a contemporary keyword, its overuse has limited its analytic usefulness. In the enthusiasm that orbits the concept, the network is too easily taken up as a term that we should already know. Patrick Jagoda claims that we do not, in fact, know networks, in part because of their very ubiquity and variety. His book shows how a range of popular aesthetic forms mediate our experience of networks and yield up greater insight into this critical concept. Each chapter of "Network Aesthetics" considers how a different contemporary genre makes sense of decentralized network structure, from fiction, film, and television to popular videogames such as Introversion's "Uplink," experimental games such as Jason Rohrer's "Between," and emergent transmedia storytelling forms such as "Alternate Reality Games." Jagoda wants to show that network aesthetics, in all of these cases, are not simply the quality of a genre; more substantively, they are a critical corollary to an era in which interconnection has become a key cultural framework. "Network Aesthetics" cuts through the cliches of sublime interconnection and illuminates the ordinary, lived aspects of networked life.

Youth Organizing for Reproductive Justice

"Youth Organizing for Reproductive Justice is an accessible and intellectually rich introduction to the topic for scholars, activists, policymakers, reproductive justice organizations, and youth themselves. The book helps us understand how young people's political organizing in the new millennium resists interlocking systems of oppression that limit bodily autonomy and self-determination. This organizing demonstrates a coalitional form of politics grounded in the struggles and worldmaking of youth of color and queer and trans youth. This analysis allows us to see how issues such as the school-to-prison pipeline and transgender youth's access to gender affirming care are reproductive justice issues alongside parental notification abortion laws and support for pregnant and parenting teens. Through case studies, activist spotlights, and organizing 'how-tos,' the youth activism described in this book is a powerful tool for understanding the interconnection of struggles for collective liberation"

Explores expressionlessness, inscrutability, and emotional withholding in Black cultural production Arguing that inexpression is a gesture that acquires distinctive meanings in concert with blackness, Deadpan tracks instances and meanings of deadpan—a vaudeville term meaning “dead face”—across literature, theater, visual and performance art, and the performance of self in everyday life. Tina Post reveals that the performance of purposeful withholding is a critical tool in the work of black culture makers, intervening in the persistent framing of African American aesthetics as colorful, loud, humorous, and excessive. Beginning with the expressionless faces of mid-twentieth-century doc...
