State-Sanctioned Violence
The helping professions and social scientists traditionally seek concepts and paradigms that can be used in shaping research and services focused on marginalized populations in the United States. Various perspectives have garnered attention across disciplines with intersectionality as a recent, salient example. However, state-sanctioned violence--built upon the foundation established by Intersectionality--introduces a purposeful socio-political agenda that is carried out by various levels of government to subjugate a group due to its beliefs, physical characteristics, and/or social circumstances. This book provides a conceptual foundation on state-sanctioned violence; critiques how this perspective holds relevance for social work research, education, and practice; examines specific examples of how and where state-sanctioned violence is manifested; and projects potential developments into the near future.
Asset Assessments and Community Social Work Practice
Needs assessments identify the needs for services, answering questions about who needs these services and in what priority. Asset assessments focuses on existing resources; combing both needs and asset assesments helps find the gaps in these services and is useful to organizations and communities. Assets assessments differ dramatically from their needs assessments counterparts along a variety of key dimensions. Asset assessments generally attempt to: (1) focus on capacities rather than problems/needs; (2) actively seek community participation and develop collaborative partnerships; (3) seek to tap and enhance community competencies; (4) seek to equalize power between residents and professionals; (5) be proactive rather than reactive to problems; and (6) stress community contributions and ownership of the process and are thus empowerment-driven.

The Coercive Control of Children
"This book identifies coercive control of women as the most important cause and context of 'child abuse' and child homicide outside a war zone, including deliberate injury to children, non- accidental child death and the sexual abuse, denigration, exploitation, isolation and subordination of children. I critique the current approaches to domestic violence and child maltreatment, provide a working model of the coercive control of children and closely examine three recent forensic cases involving of children of coercive control. In most instances, the coercive control of women and children run in tandem. In these cases, children are abused to further entrap and exploit their mother, a form of 'secondary' victimization.
