This volume is dedicated to Maria Antonietta Pinto’s research across the past five decades. The title reflects not only the dominance of metalinguistic awareness in Pinto’s work but also the pathway through which this construct has been elaborated over the years. Under the influence of two great mentors, Jean Piaget for the cognitive aspects, and Renzo Titone for the psycholinguistic aspects, Pinto created an original construct of metalinguistic awareness and instruments to measure it at different developmental stages. The volume pays tribute, among other aspects, to the heuristic value of this construct and its use in international research.
This conceptually expansive volume provides a theoretical framework and practical guide for designing and implementing literacy instruction that promotes students’ critical metalinguistic awareness in K–12 classroom contexts. Grounded in varied instructional contexts, the chapters present theories of language and overviews of research in ways that are accessible and engaging. Through innovative research and practical examples, the authors show how educators can address content areas, modalities, and K–12 student populations in increasingly diverse classroom spaces. Concrete instructional examples throughout, along with a culminating set of teacher vignettes, make this text an invaluable resource for pre-service teachers, graduate students, and scholars in the field of literacy education.

This edited volume brings together ten compelling ethnographic case studies from a range of global settings to explore how people build metalinguistic communities defined not by use of a language, but primarily by language ideologies and symbolic practices about the language. The authors examine themes of agency, belonging, negotiating hegemony, and combating cultural erasure and genocide in cultivating meaningful metalinguistic communities. Case studies include Spanish and Hebrew in the USA, Kurdish in Japan, Pataxó Hãhãhãe in Brazil, and Gallo in France. The afterword, by Wesley L. Leonard, provides theoretical and on-the-ground context as well as a forward-looking focus on metalinguistic futurities. This book will be of interest to interdisciplinary students and scholars in applied linguistics, linguistic anthropology and migration studies.
At a very early age, the child is able to use and understand language correctly. Later comes the precocious ability to “reflect” upon and deliberately control its use. Metalinguistic development, or the emergence of a reflective attitude to the comprehension and production of oral and written language, must be distinguished from that of ordinary verbal communication. This is the first book to review and analyze what is known about metacognitive processes in relation to language. Each of its seven chapters deals systematically with the relationship between the comprehension and production of the phonetic, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and textual aspects of language. This material is th...
'Language Turned on Itself' is a book about how language can be used to talk about language. It examines the semantics, the pragmatics, and the syntax of linguistic devices that can be used in this way.
