Of the parts of the human body, the bones have a unique durability that lends itself to collection. Provided a body has not been cremated, the skeletal remains can be recovered even millions of years after death, cleaned of flesh and debris, studied at length, and stored indefinitely without the maintenance that wet specimens require. Motivations for collecting human skeletal material range from the practical (in anthropology, medicine, forensics) to the ritualistic (phrenology, in the relics of martyrs and saints). This book is an examination of those motivations and the collections they have brought about--catacombs, ossuaries, mass graves, prehistoric excavations, private collections, and institutions. The book contains sections on procuring, handling, storing, transporting, cleaning, and identifying skeletal remains. The repatriation of remains and legislation covering the topic are also addressed.

Industrial Control Systems Security and Resiliency

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the key concerns as well as research challenges in designing secure and resilient Industrial Control Systems (ICS). It will discuss today's state of the art security architectures and couple it with near and long term research needs that compare to the baseline. It will also establish all discussions to generic reference architecture for ICS that reflects and protects high consequence scenarios. Significant strides have been made in making industrial control systems secure. However, increasing connectivity of ICS systems with commodity IT devices and significant human interaction of ICS systems during its operation regularly introduces newer thr...

The Haney Family

Excerpt from The Haney Family: A Brief Record of an American Clan My interest in the history of the Haney Family began at the age of Sixteen, when I came across a copy of William J. Buck's Account of the Buck Family of Bucks County, Pennsylvania (1893) and found therein interesting references to our ancestors dating back as far as 1745. Since that time, whenever opportunity afforded, I gleaned further information about the early Haneys in Pennsylvania. The inauguration Of the Haney Reunions in 1910 and the organization of the Haney Family Association under the leadership of my uncle, the late Michael G. Haney, Of Ottsville, Pa., stimulated that interest and made available new sources of info...

The Privatization of the Russian Coal Industry

This paper provides an overview of the privatization of the Russian coal industry. It reviews the salient aspects of the Government's privatization policy as it evolved over the years, and looks at the reasons for the successes and the pitfalls encountered along the way. Specific procedures and methods of sale are described in detail. A profile of the new owners of the industry is given, with a look at the implications for competition in the industry and at first performance indicators. As the World Bank has been closely involved in the support of the Government's coal sector restructuring program through provision of financing and policy advice, throughout the paper aspects of World Bank advice are considered.

The American Midwest

This first-ever encyclopedia of the Midwest seeks to embrace this large and diverse area, to give it voice, and help define its distinctive character. Organized by topic, it encourages readers to reflect upon the region as a whole. Each section moves from the general to the specific, covering broad themes in longer introductory essays, filling in the details in the shorter entries that follow. There are portraits of each of the region's twelve states, followed by entries on society and culture, community and social life, economy and technology, and public life. The book offers a wealth of information about the region's surprising ethnic diversity -- a vast array of foods, languages, styles, religions, and customs -- plus well-informed essays on the region's history, culture and values, and conflicts. A site of ideas and innovations, reforms and revivals, and social and physical extremes, the Midwest emerges as a place of great complexity, signal importance, and continual fascination.
