Most people know what their sexual fantasies are but few of us have an insight into why they work. In this groundbreaking exploration of the libido, Dr Michael Bader draws on 25 years experience as a psychotherapist to offer a new theory of sexual desire: that our sexual imaginations are a 'portable first-aid kit for our psyches'. His analysis - that our fantasies are neither kinky nor perverse, but dependent on a need for psychological safety - enables us to understand the complex dynamics that determine our sexual preferences. Dr Bader uses case studies from his own practice to build up a convincing argument that our fantasies - from the conventional to the seemingly bizarre - work as an a...

At first glance the sexual male seems easy to understand, but beneath the surface lie complexities that disrupt lives and relationships. Why can men be so distant in bed? Why do many men love porn so much? And can he love porn and still love his wife? Respected psychologist Michael Bader takes an honest look at the nuances of male sexuality, addressing issues such as sexual boredom, internet sex, and sexual fantasies that can leave women bewildered and men ashamed. Illustrated with engaging examples from his practice, Male Sexuality gives readers, both women and men, deeper understanding of male behavior from the flamboyant to the mundane. Through increased awareness of the psychology behind the sex, Bader aims to enhance individual self-esteem and improve communication in relationships.
Linking the differing techniques deployed in describing space-filling curves to their corresponding algorithms, this book introduces SFCs as tools in scientific computing, focusing in particular on the representation of SFCs and on the resulting algorithms.
There is an invisible army of people deep inside the world's biggest and best-known companies, pushing for safer and more responsible practices. They are trying to prevent the next Rana Plaza factory collapse, the next Deepwater Horizon explosion, the next Foxconn labor abuses. Obviously, they don't always succeed. Christine Bader is one of those people. She worked for and loved BP and then-CEO John Browne's lofty rhetoric on climate change and human rights--until a string of fatal BP accidents, Browne's abrupt resignation under a cloud of scandal, and the start of Tony Hayward's tenure as chief executive, which would end with the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Bader's story of working deep ins...
Policies dealing with religious diversity in liberal democratic states—as well as the established institutions that enforce those policies—are increasingly under pressure. Politics and political theory are caught in a trap between the fully secularized state and neo-corporate regimes of selective cooperation between states and organized religion. This volume proposes an original, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary approach to problems of governing religious diversity—combining moral and political philosophy, constitutional law, history, sociology, and religious anthropology. Drawing on such diverse scholarship, Secularism or Democracy? proposes an associational governance—a moderately libertarian, flexible variety of democratic institutional pluralism—as the plausible third way to overcome the inherent deficiencies of the predominant models.
Despite losing both legs in a pre-war accident, Douglas Bader returned to active service, leading squadrons to victory in the Battle of Britain. This volume portrays Bader as a pilot and leader, whose endeavours and techniques were emulated by his colleagues.
In More Than Bread and Butter, Dr. Michael Bader, a practicing psychologist, psychoanalyst, writer, and social activist for over 35 years, argues that the traditional liberal assumption that people's need for economic security dwarfs all other needs in importance is incorrect and too narrow, neglecting as it does the centrality of other powerful human motivations such as the need for meaning and purpose, connectedness to others, recognition, and agency. The satisfaction of these non-economic needs is crucial to engaging more people and building healthier progressive organizations. Dr. Bader presents vignettes from his direct clinical work, consultations with the leadership teams of large pro...
This proceedings volume collects review articles that summarize research conducted at the Munich Centre of Advanced Computing (MAC) from 2008 to 2012. The articles address the increasing gap between what should be possible in Computational Science and Engineering due to recent advances in algorithms, hardware, and networks, and what can actually be achieved in practice; they also examine novel computing architectures, where computation itself is a multifaceted process, with hardware awareness or ubiquitous parallelism due to many-core systems being just two of the challenges faced. Topics cover both the methodological aspects of advanced computing (algorithms, parallel computing, data exploration, software engineering) and cutting-edge applications from the fields of chemistry, the geosciences, civil and mechanical engineering, etc., reflecting the highly interdisciplinary nature of the Munich Centre of Advanced Computing.
This open access book documents and analyses the various interventions - legal, political, and even artistic - that followed the Ali Enterprises factory fire in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2012. It illuminates the different substantive and procedural aspects of the legal proceedings and negotiations between the various local and transnational actors implicated in the Ali Enterprises fire, as well as the legal and policy reforms sparked by the incident. This endeavour serves to embed these legal cases and reform efforts in the larger context of human and labour rights protection and global value chain governance. It also offers a concrete case study relevant for ongoing debates around the role of transnational approaches in making human rights litigation, advocacy, and law reform more effective. In this regard, the book interrogates and critically reflects on such legal campaigns and local and transnational reform work with a view to future transformative legal and social activism. .
