Experienced Life and Narrated Life Story

Experienced Life and Narrated Life Story

How do people narrate events in their life story and in the history of their family or families when making a self-presentation? How are narratives and experiences in the present related to experiences and narratives in the past? This book answers these questions with a theoretical and empirical study of the interconnections between remembering, experiencing, and presenting what was experienced, at different points of the life course and of the associated collective histories. It also discusses rules for conducting interviews that support processes of remembering, and for carrying out an analysis that does justice to this dialectic. The author exploits ideas from phenomenology and Gestalt theory in this book, which has become a classic. Since its first publication in 1995, she has increasingly taken inspiration from the figurational sociology of Norbert Elias. Accordingly, this English edition contains a new introduction and a new chapter on this later expansion of her approach to sociological biographical research.

With the Face of the Enemy

With the Face of the Enemy focuses on the writings of Arab American authors between 2001 and 2011. Positioned as Arab Americans in the post-9/11 U.S., this underexamined group of writers projects unique insights into both the Western and Arab worlds. Using the lens of postcolonial literary theory, Katharina Motyl explores how the »War on Terror« turned Arab Americans into enemies within their own country. Countering the master narrative of a »clash of civilizations« between the Islamicate world and the West, the fictional and poetic texts discussed in this book alternate between deconstructing neo-Orientalist stereotypes and critiquing U.S. neocolonialism in the Greater Middle East, on t...

Taming the Revolution in Nineteenth-Century Spain

Unrest in the Roman Empire

Unrest in the Roman Empire

Despite Roman claims to have brought peace, unrest was widespread in the Roman empire. Revolts, protests and piracy were common occurrences. How did contemporaries relate to and make sense of such phenomena? This volume gathers eleven contributions by specialists in the various literatures and modes of thinking that flourished in the empire between the second century BCE and the fifth century CE - including Graeco-Roman historiography and philosophy, Jewish prophecy, Christian apology and the writings of the Tannaitic rabbis - to investigate these questions. Each contribution analyses the discourses by which the diverse authors of these texts understood instances of unrest. Together the contributions expand our understanding of the varied politics that pervaded the Roman empire. They highlight the intellectual labour at every level of society that went to (re)making this imperial formation throughout its long history.
