Bereits von frühester Jugend an fühlte sich der Dichter Rilke von dem Thema Tod angesprochen, später bekannte er sich gar dazu, ein Schüler des Todes zu sein. Vor allem in den frühen Gedichtzyklen Stundenbuch, Larenopfer, Buch der Bilder sowie dem berühmten Cornet nimmt die Todesthematik eine zentrale Rolle ein. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Todesthematik in Rilkes Frühwerk aus dem interdisziplinären Blickwinkel von Literatur- und Musikwissenschaft und setzt einen Schwerpunkt auf die Analyse von ausgewählten Rilke-Vertonungen. Rilkes ambivalenter Todesbegriff, sein Schwanken zwischen Faszination, Akzeptanz und Grauen, bietet den Komponisten eine Vielzahl an Möglichkeiten, den Tod musikalisch zu interpretieren. Zu den Werken, die in dieser Arbeit besprochen werden, gehören unter anderem die groß angelegten Chorkompositionen von Paul von Klenau und Quirin Rische aus den 1920er und 1930er Jahren, die den Soldatentod als einen patriotischen Heldentod feiern, das 1944 in Theresienstadt entstandene Cornet-Melodram von Viktor Ullmann sowie die 14. Symphonie von Dmitri Schostakowitsch, die auch den Beinamen Todessymphonie trägt.
