A review of the theory and techniques of Fourier Spectroscopy is given, and the present state-of-the-art of reducing data obtained by this means is discussed. Certain inherent problems are present in today's methods of reducing the data obtained by Fourier Spectroscopy techniques, the so-called interferogram. They are: (1) In the case of a symmetric interferogram where digital recording is used, the point corresponding to zero path difference may not be recorded. A simple cosine transform of this data leads to incorrect results. (2) In the case of improper compensation of an interferometer, asymmetric interferograms result. The method of reducing these is to pick an approximate center, take ...

Say Hello

"A beautiful pairing of son’s sparse rhyming text with father’s simple drawings . . . A poignant debut about including others and making friends." — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) A lone dog comes upon a group of kids playing ball and with leaping ease, joins the game. They’re all having so much fun, they don’t see a sad little boy standing off by himself. Who will spy the boy and invite him to play? With arresting images by a master illustrator and a simple, touching text by his son, Say Hello evokes the joy and relief of finding a new friend just when you need one the most.

Voice

The volume's central concern is grammatical voice, traditionally known as diathesis, and its classical manifestations as Active, Middle, and Passive. While numerous problems in the meaning, syntax, and morphology of these categories in Indo-European remain unsolved, their counterparts in more exotic languages have raised still further questions. What discourse functions and diachronic events unite 'voice' as a recognizable phenomenon across languages? How are they typically grammaticalized? What stages do children go through in learning them? How does 'voice' link up with ergativity and with other categories and constructions such as the Inverse and the Antipassive? The authors in this volume have different perspectives on these problems: they discuss voice, e.g., from a typological-universal view, in relation to language acquisition and to ergativity, and from diachronic and cross-linguistic perspectives.
