Challenges at the Interface of Data Analysis, Computer Science, and Optimization
This volume provides approaches and solutions to challenges occurring at the interface of research fields such as data analysis, computer science, operations research, and statistics. It includes theoretically oriented contributions as well as papers from various application areas, where knowledge from different research directions is needed to find the best possible interpretation of data for the underlying problem situations. Beside traditional classification research, the book focuses on current interests in fields such as the analysis of social relationships as well as statistical musicology.
Graph Partitioning and Graph Clustering
Graph partitioning and graph clustering are ubiquitous subtasks in many applications where graphs play an important role. Generally speaking, both techniques aim at the identification of vertex subsets with many internal and few external edges. To name only a few, problems addressed by graph partitioning and graph clustering algorithms are: What are the communities within an (online) social network? How do I speed up a numerical simulation by mapping it efficiently onto a parallel computer? How must components be organized on a computer chip such that they can communicate efficiently with each other? What are the segments of a digital image? Which functions are certain genes (most likely) responsible for? The 10th DIMACS Implementation Challenge Workshop was devoted to determining realistic performance of algorithms where worst case analysis is overly pessimistic and probabilistic models are too unrealistic. Articles in the volume describe and analyze various experimental data with the goal of getting insight into realistic algorithm performance in situations where analysis fails.
Algorithms from and for Nature and Life
This volume provides approaches and solutions to challenges occurring at the interface of research fields such as, e.g., data analysis, data mining and knowledge discovery, computer science, operations research, and statistics. In addition to theory-oriented contributions various application areas are included. Moreover, traditional classification research directions concerning network data, graphs, and social relationships as well as statistical musicology describe examples for current interest fields tackled by the authors. The book comprises a total of 55 selected papers presented at the Joint Conference of the German Classification Society (GfKl), the German Association for Pattern Recognition (DAGM), and the Symposium of the International Federation of Classification Societies (IFCS) in 2011.
The Global Cyber-Vulnerability Report
This is the first book that uses cyber-vulnerability data to explore the vulnerability of over four million machines per year, covering a two-year period as reported by Symantec. Analyzing more than 20 billion telemetry reports comprising malware and binary reputation reports, this book quantifies the cyber-vulnerability of 44 countries for which at least 500 hosts were monitored. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 7th International Joint Conference on e-Business and Telecommunications, ICETE 2010, held in Athens, Greece, in July 2010. The 28 revised full papers presented together with 1 invited paper in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 422 initial submissions. They have passed two rounds of selection and improvement. German-Japanese Interchange of Data Analysis Results
