Peacebuilding and reconciliation between groups and entire nations that share a violent past are among the toughest, yet most important, challenges for modern societies. Opposing perspectives, disagreements about the interpretation of historical events or even entirely different narratives too often impede processes of rapprochement. How can teaching history contribute to overcoming the demarcation lines of such narratives and resolving historical conflicts that are passed on from generation to generation or renewed, amplified and exploited for present political purposes? This volume comprises twelve case studies—from Central and Eastern Europe to South Africa, from the Middle East to East Asia—exploring stories about successes and failures in the never-ending struggle for peaceful coexistence. All of them ultimately reflect the fundamental question of our discipline: Can we learn from history?

Das Handbuch präsentiert neueste und internationale Forschungsergebnisse über politische und gesellschaftliche Friedensordnungen, Friedenskonzepte und -praktiken sowie Kulturen des Friedens in der Frühen Neuzeit.
Early Modern European Diplomacy
New Diplomatic History has turned into one of the most dynamic and innovative areas of research – especially with regard to early modern history. It has shown that diplomacy was not as homogenous as previously thought. On the contrary, it was shaped by a multitude of actors, practices and places. The handbook aims to characterise these different manifestations of diplomacy and to contextualise them within ongoing scientific debates. It brings together scholars from different disciplines and historiographical traditions. The handbook deliberately focuses on European diplomacy – although non-European areas are taken into account for future research – in order to limit the framework and ensure precise definitions of diplomacy and its manifestations. This must be the prerequisite for potential future global historical perspectives including both the non-European and the European world.
Reformed Majorities in Early Modern Europe
This volume contains the papers of the international RefoRC conference on 'Reformed Majorities and Minorities in Early Modern Europe' as it was organized by the Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek, Emden in cooperation with the Faculty of 'Artes Liberales' of the University of Warsaw. The conference took place April 10-12, 2013 in Emden and was part of the research project 'Doctrina et Tolerantia' directed by the Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek. The contributions in this volume deal with the question how the relation between doctrine and toleration was dealt with in territories with a Reformed majority. Did the refugee-experience of the Reformed make them tolerant or militant? How did official policy relate to everyday practice? Were there different opinions on this issue within the Reformed tradition? The answers to these questions give more insights into the diversity of international Calvinism and the way theory was put into practice.
Time and Power
Inspired by the insights of Reinhart Koselleck and François Hartog, two pioneers of the "temporal turn" in historiography, Clark shows how Friedrich Wilhelm rejected the notion of continuity with the past, believing instead that a sovereign must liberate the state from the entanglements of tradition to choose freely among different possible futures. He demonstrates how Frederick the Great abandoned this paradigm for a neoclassical vision of history in which sovereign and state transcend time altogether, and how Bismarck believed that the statesman's duty was to preserve the timeless permanence of the state amid the torrent of historical change. Clark describes how Hitler did not seek to revolutionize history like Stalin and Mussolini, but instead sought to evade history altogether, emphasizing timeless racial archetypes and a prophetically foretold future.

On the Way to the "(Un)Known"?
This volume brings together twenty-two authors from various countries who analyze travelogues on the Ottoman Empire between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. The travelogues reflect the colorful diversity of the genre, presenting the experiences of individuals and groups from China to Great Britain. The spotlight falls on interdependencies of travel writing and historiography, geographic spaces, and specific practices such as pilgrimages, the hajj, and the harem. Other points of emphasis include the importance of nationalism, the place and time of printing, representations of fashion, and concepts of masculinity and femininity. By displaying close, comparative, and distant readings, the volume offers new insights into perceptions of "otherness", the circulation of knowledge, intermedial relations, gender roles, and digital analysis.

The Introduction and the chapter Toleration and Religious Polemics are available in Open Access. Searching for Compromise? is a collection of articles researching the issues of toleration, interreligious peace and models of living together in a religiously diverse Central and Eastern Europe during the Early Modern period. By studying theologians, legal cases, literature, individuals, and congregations this volume brings forth unique local dynamics in Central and Eastern Europe. Scholars and researchers will find these issues explored from the perspectives of diverse groups of Christians such as Catholics, Hussies, Bohemian Brethren, Old Believers, Eastern Orthodox, Lutherans, Calvinists, Moravians and Unitarians. Frühneuzeitliche Friedensstiftung in landesgeschichtlicher Perspektive
Die Historische Friedensforschung ist angesichts der vielgestaltigen Konflikte der gegenwärtigen Staatenwelt gefragter denn je. Gerade die Epoche der Frühen Neuzeit bietet aufgrund ihrer auffällig hohen Kriegsdichte zahlreiche Anknüpfungspunkte zur Erforschung der Frage, wie in der Vergangenheit konkret versucht wurde, Frieden herzustellen. Zwar sind zentrale Aspekte frühneuzeitlicher Friedensstiftung, wie Friedenskongresse und -verträge, Verhandlungstechniken oder Friedensdenken, in der neueren Geschichtswissenschaft bereits intensiv analysiert worden. In zweiter Reihe stand bislang allerdings die landesgeschichtliche Verortung der erzielten Befunde. Angesichts des defizitären Forschungsstands zielt der Sammelband darauf ab, in territorial und europäisch übergreifender Weise die Potenziale einer Verbindung landesgeschichtlicher Fragestellungen mit der Historischen Friedensforschung aufzuzeigen.
