Batu Bersurat Terengganu

Imagined Geographies

Imagined Geographies is a pioneering work in the study of history and geography of the pre-1800 world. In this book, Gunn argues that different regions astride the maritime silk roads were not only interconnected but can also be construed as “imagined geographies.” Taking a grand civilizational perspective, five such geographic imaginaries are examined across respective chapters, namely Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and European including an imagined Great South Land. Drawing upon an array of marine and other archaeological examples, the author offers compelling evidence of the intertwining of political, cultural, and economic regions across the sea silk roads from ancient times unt...

Sacred Biography in the Buddhist Traditions of South and Southeast Asia

This collection of previously unpublished essays presents a broad range of explorations into the biographical genre of the Buddhist traditions of South and Southeast Asia. Each contribution examines sacred biography in one or more representational modalities in the texts, art history, literature, myths, rituals and cultures of the Buddhist tradition. Scholars in the history of religions, anthropology, literature and art history present a broad range of explorations into sacred biography as an interpretive genre. The essays investigate both universal and local articulations of Buddhist sacred biography, illustrating the construction of interpretive frames of reference that map salient themes onto diverse contexts. The combination of thematic depth and theoretical sophistication in Sacred Biography makes this volume innovative reading for all scholars with comparative interests.

The Khmers of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries are best remembered by the magnificent monuments that they left the world-the ruins of Angkor Wat, the Bayon and Banteay Chmar and other relics at Siem Reap now attract over a million visitors annually. The Khmers, as well as visionary architects and builders, were by far the most formidable fighting force of Southeast Asia, and much of their fabled wealth was generated directly from the spoils of their conquests. In the present volume, drawing on depictions of warfare found on the stone reliefs of the monuments mentioned above, French scholar Jacq-Hergoualc'h reconstructs a vivid image of the Khmer army, providing insight into its organization, technology and strategies. Essential reading not only for those with interest in the history of war and weaponry but for all who seek a better understanding of the brilliant culture of the creators of Angkor.

--- Buku persembahan penerbit Kencana (Prenadamedia)

Southeast Asia and the Middle East

Contemporary concerns with the way the movement of Islamist ideas has radicalized Southeast Asia are put in a necessary deep historical context by this timely book. The fourteen authors represent the best of the new trilingual scholarship doing justice to both Arabic and Indonesian sources. They reach back to the seventh century to explain how trade brought the two crossroads of Eurasia together, and Islam provided the passion and the idiom for their subsequent complex interactions. There are no centers and peripheries in this sophisticated interpretation of how waves of reform have affected both homelands. Such relationships contribute to regional and global events in many crucial ways, and this volume is important for anyone interested in the future of Asia and the Middle East.

The Garland Handbook of Southeast Asian Music is comprised of essays from The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: Volume 4, Southeast Asia (1998). Largely revised and updated, the essays offer detailed, regional studies of the different musical cultures of Southeast Asia and examine the ways in which music helps to define the identity of this particular area. Part one provides an in-depth introduction to the area of Southeast Asia and explores a series of issues and processes, such as colonialism, mass media, spirituality, and war. The articles in this section are important in gaining historical, political, and social perspective. Part two focuses on mainland Southeast Asia, with essays rep...
