MAPPING: MAnagement and Processing of Images for Population ImagiNG

Several recent papers underline methodological points that limit the validity of published results in imaging studies in the life sciences and especially the neurosciences (Carp, 2012; Ingre, 2012; Button et al., 2013; Ioannidis, 2014). At least three main points are identified that lead to biased conclusions in research findings: endemic low statistical power and, selective outcome and selective analysis reporting. Because of this, and in view of the lack of replication studies, false discoveries or solutions persist. To overcome the poor reliability of research findings, several actions should be promoted including conducting large cohort studies, data sharing and data reanalysis. The cons...

Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine in Europe, AIME 2003, held in Protaras, Cyprus, in October 2003. The 24 revised full papers and 26 revised short papers presented together with two invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from 65 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on temporal reasoning, ontology and terminology, image processing and simulation, guidelines and clinical protocols, terminology and natural language issues, machine learning, probabilistic networks and Bayesian models, case-based reasoning and decision support, and data mining and knowledge discovery.

Ontology began life in ancient times as a fundamental part of philosophical enquiry concerned with the analysis and categorisation of what exists. In recent years, the subject has taken a practical turn with the advent of complex computerised information systems which are reliant on robust and coherent representations of their subject matter. The systematisation and elaboration of such representations and their associated reasoning techniques constitute the modern discipline of formal ontology, which is now being applied to such diverse domains as artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, bioinformatics, GIS, knowledge engineering, information retrieval and the Semantic Web. Resear...

Our Senses

“An animated introduction to the neuroscience of sensory perception” informed by the latest research on topics from music to brain injuries to synesthesia (Kirkus Reviews). In recent years neuroscience has uncovered a wealth of new information about our senses and how they serve as our gateway to the world. This splendidly accessible book explores the most intriguing findings of this research. With infectious enthusiasm, Rob DeSalle illuminates not only how we see, hear, smell, touch, taste, maintain balance, feel pain, and rely on other less familiar senses, but also how these senses shape our perception of the world aesthetically, artistically, and musically. DeSalle first examines the...

This is the Golden Age for Artificial Intelligence. The world is becoming increasingly automated and wired together. This also increases the opportunities for AI to help people and commerce. Almost every sub field of AI had now been used in substantial applications. Some of the fields highlighted in this publication are: CBR Technology; Model Based Systems; Data Mining and Natural Language Techniques. Not only does this publication show the activities, capabilities and accomplishments of the sub fields, it also focuses on what is happening across the field as a whole.
