The Middle Kingdom (ca. 2000-1700 BC) was Detlef Franke's favorite period, (24.11.1952-2.9.2007) which he studied for most of his career. Based primarily on private documents from these centuries, he became the first in Egyptology to reconstruct the Ancient Egyptian kinship system as a whole, by also connecting the Egyptian system typologically with the ones known from cultural anthropology and other parts of the world. The book collects more than 400 dossiers of the Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period non-royal women. This work is complementary to D. Franke Personendaten aus dem Mittleren Reich (Wiesbaden 1984), and to W. Grajetzki and D. Stefanović, Dossiers of Ancient Egyptians -the Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period addition to Franke's 'Personendaten' (London 2012) establishing sets of data for women known from more than one source.
This volume continues the scope and method of the first 'World of Middle Kingdom Egypt' collection, containing a selection of contribution from established scholars on a variety of topics, ranging in date from the beginning of the Middle Kingdom to the early New Kingdom. The cardinal focus is on the archaeology including objects from museum collections or from hitherto unpublished excavations. Other contributions relate to written sources, religion, and contacts between Egypt and the neighbouring regions.

The chapters of Middle Kingdom Palace Culture and Its Echoes in the Provinces discuss the degree of influence that provincial developments played in reshaping the Egyptian state and culture during the Middle Kingdom. Contributors to the volume are Egyptologists from around the world who have developed their research following a conference held at the University of Jaén in Spain.
The current volume assembles a series of studies of Middle Kingdom culture gathered around the theme of archaism, change, and innovation. The papers had their origin in a symposium the University of Pennsylvania Museum hosted in 2002, and held in memory of the great Middle Kingdom scholar, Oleg Berlev. The Penn Museum organized the conference that received generous support from the Center for Ancient Studies of the University of Pennsylvania and the Marilyn and William Kelly Simpson Endowment in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Yale University. For the publication, the authors revised and augmented their essays, allowing this volume to include up-to-date information. The editors also invited other scholars to contribute additional studies resulting in a volume that deals with the Middle Kingdom in a broader context. The Marilyn and William Kelly Simpson endowment in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Yale University generously provided the funds necessary for the publication of the volume.

"In The Representations of Women in the Middle Kingdom Tombs of Officials Lubica Hudáková offers an in-depth analysis of female iconography in the decorative programme of Middle Kingdom non-royal tombs, highlighting changes and innovations in comparison to the Old Kingdom. Previously considered too uniform, the study represents the first systematic investigation of two-dimensional images of women and reveals their variability in space and time. Hudáková examines the roles appointed to women by analyzing how they are depicted in a variety of contexts. Taking into account their postures, gestures, garments, hairstyles, size of the body, age as well as attributes and tools used by them, along with the scene orientation, she traces diachronic and diatopic developments and regional traditions in the Middle Kingdom tomb decoration"--
In 1895–96, William Matthew Flinders Petrie and James Edward Quibell discovered a shaft-tomb below the ‘Ramesseum’, the funerary temple of Ramses II at Thebes, Egypt. This is most famous for having the largest group of Middle Kingdom papyri – also known as the Ramesseum Papyri – found in a single spot together with a number of distinctive objects, such as carved ivory tusks and miniature figurines in various materials dated around XVIII century BC. Gianluca Miniaci attempts to thoroughly reconstruct the archaeological context of the tomb: the exact find spot (forgotten afterwards its discovery), its architecture, the identity of its owner(s) and recipient(s) of the assemblage of artifacts. A detailed analysis of the single artifacts – provided for the first with full color photographic records and drawings – and their network of relations gives new life to the Ramesseum assemblage after more than a century from its discovery.
