Cerebral preconditioning is a phenomenon wherein a mild insult or stress induces cellular and tissue adaptation or tolerance to a later, severe injury, therefore reflecting the efficacy of endogenous mechanisms of cerebrovascular protection. Initially identified for rapid cardiac protection, preconditioning has expanded to all aspects of CNS protection from ischemia, trauma and potentially neurodegeneration. Diabetes
Cerebral ischemia is one of the major complications of diabetes. Eighty four percent of diabetics die from either heart disease or stroke (both cause cerebral ischemia). Diabetes-induced oxidative stress is one of the factors responsible for the secondary complications of diabetes. Oxidative stress also plays a key role in cerebral ischemic damage. In this chapter we provide a literature review of how cerebral ischemia-induced oxidative stress is exacerbated in diabetics. We also provide correlates of how this increased oxidative stress may be responsible for increased cerebral ischemia damage in diabetics.

In 1996, for its 24th scientific meeting, the International Society on Oxygen Trans port to Tissue made its third visit to the United Kingdom. The previous two meetings were held in Cambridge in 1977 and 1986, but this was the first meeting to be held "north of the border" in Scotland. It was attended by some 186 delegates and accompanying persons and there were 128 presentations. The venue was the West Park Centre, the University of Dundee's residential conference centre, and ISOTT was only the second major meeting to be held there using the new Villa accommodation.
