Offering the possibility of a new relationship between teachers and learners, this book describes an approach to teaching styles and student progress, whereby the emphasis is on activity-based learning, rather than on teaching, and on teacher-student collaboration, rather than instruction. The book aims to show how students of any age and ability can take responsibility for their own learning in an environment of positive regard, as teachers become facilitators rather than instructors.
This book seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice by identifying the main challenges which the implementation of the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is posing in language teaching. It reports on the outcomes yielded by prominent European research projects and thematic networks and presents the insights of a prestigious set of scholars, practitioners, and policy-makers from different parts of Europe. The book is divided into four main parts. The first section examines the coordination of language studies in the European Higher Education Area, from general language policy development, to the practicalities of coordinating whole degrees or drawing up ECTS study guides. The second part analyses the concept of competencies within the Bologna process. Methodological aspects are broached in the third thematic block by sharing practical accounts and experiences across Europe. The final part seeks to clarify the most important aspects with regard to evaluating language learning in the new credit system, and examines learning outcomes, student work hours, or ECTS credits.
This book addresses several fundamental aspects of social work practice. From a qualitative and exploratory perspective, the book analyses pre-professional practices in the formation of social workers by contrasting the perspectives of students, institutional supervisors and university lecturers. Areas of opportunity in training are identified, such as handling personal and family crises of high conflict, the lack of specialised knowledge according to intervention areas, and limited participation in technical processes. The book proposes strengthening communication, mediation and emotional support skills, as well as incorporating optional courses and specific diplomas to fill these gaps. Methodologically, the book is based on semi-structured interviews and focus groups, allowing a systemic understanding of the educational phenomenon from the voice of the main actors. Together, this work offers an enriching overview of the challenges and opportunities in the practical training of social workers, laying the foundations for improving the quality of these training processes.
Quality and professional development - The thesis of this book is that the University develops a formative task at the higher levels as required, in order to be effective, with regard to institutional conditions as well as the capacitation of their personnel. The formative mission of each university institution is concretized and carried out in its curricular offer and its quality of formation, for its part, it will depend in good measure on the performance of the teachers. Today it is beyond doubt that good teaching requires command of different competencies on the part of the teachers of each faculty or school. The “university curriculum”, the “teaching skills” and the “analysis of the teaching quality” are the three big parts in the book. Ten competencies that summarize the most important aspects of the university professors’ activity are analysed. Competencies that can serve as a mark of reference for a possible program of qualification of the university professors.
