Agust Nieto-Galan argues that chemistry in the twentieth century was deeply and profoundly political. Far from existing in a distinct public sphere, chemical knowledge was applied in ways that created strong links with industrial and military projects, and national rivalries and international endeavours, that materially shaped the living conditions of millions of citizens. It is within this framework that Nieto-Galan analyses how Spanish chemists became powerful ideological agents in different political contexts, from liberal to dictatorial regimes, throughout the century. He unveils chemists' position of power in Spain, their place in international scientific networks, and their engagement in fierce ideological battles in an age of extremes. Shared discourses between chemistry and liberalism, war, totalitarianism, religion, and diplomacy, he argues, led to advancements in both fields.
With an introduction by Roy Foster A classic work of Irish literature, this award-winning novel is an exploration of love, art and identity. This was the night train to Barcelona, some hours before the dawn. This was 1950, late September. I had left my husband. I had left my home. Katherine Proctor has dared to leave her family in Ireland and reach out for a new life. Determined to become an artist, she flees to Spain, where she meets Miguel, a passionate man who has fought for his own freedoms. They retreat to the quiet intensity of the mountains and begin to build a life together. But as Miguel's past catches up with him, Katherine too is forced to re-examine her relationships: with her lover, her painting and the homeland she only thought she knew. . . The South is the book that introduced readers to the astonishing gifts of Colm Tóibín, winning the Irish Times First Fiction Award in 1991. Arrestingly visual and enduringly atmospheric, it is a classic novel of art, sacrifice, and courage. * Pre-order Long Island, the stunning sequel to Tóibín's prize-winning, bestselling novel Brooklyn *
This finite study examines how exactitude has come to occupy such a prominent place in Western culture. Beginning with the late 18th century and continuing into the 20th, the essays here support the view that centralizing states and large-scale commercial enterprises have long been the major promoters of numerical precision. 1 Aim and General Description of the Anthology The purpose of this anthology is to introduce the English speaking public to the wide spectrum of texts authored predominently by physicists portraying the ac tual and perceived role of physics in the Nazi state. Up to now no broad and well balanced documentation of German physics during this time has been available in English, despite the significant role physics has played both politically (e. g. , in weaponry planning) and ideologically (e. g. , in the controversy over the value of theoretical ('Jewish') vs. experimental ('Aryan') physics), and even though prominent figures like the scientist-philosopher and emigre Albert Einstein and the con...
In modern mathematical physics, classical together with quantum, geometrical and functional analytic methods are used simultaneously. Non-commutative geometry in particular is becoming a useful tool in quantum field theories. This book, aimed at advanced students and researchers, provides an introduction to these ideas. Researchers will benefit particularly from the extensive survey articles on models relating to quantum gravity, string theory, and non-commutative geometry, as well as Connes' approach to the standard model.
To some philosophers, seeking to understand the human condition, technology is a necessary guide. But to think through the complex human phenomenon of technology we must tackle philosophy of science, philosophy of culture, moral issues, comparative civilizational studies, and the economics of specific industrial and military technologies in their historical contexts. The philoso pher wants to grasp the technological factor in this troubled world, even as we see it is only one factor, and that it does not speak openly for itself. Put directly, our human troubles to a considerable extent have been transformed, exaggerated, distorted, even degraded, perhaps transcended, by what engi neers and s...
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of 4 workshops held at the 14th IFIP WG 12.5 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations, AIAI 2018, held in Rhodes, Greece, in May 2018. The workshops were the Workshop on Semantics in the Deep: Semantic Analytics for Big Data, SEDSEAL 2018; the Third Workshop on 5G - Putting Intelligence to the Network Edge, 5G-PINE 2018; the 7th Mining Humanistic Data Workshop, MHDW 2018; and the Workshop on Intelligent Cloud and IOT Paradigms in EHealth, HEALTHIOT 2018. The 19 full papers and 5 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 53 submissions: SEDSEAL accepted 2 full papers out of 5 submissions, 5G-PINE 6 full and one short paper out of 24, MHDW 7 full and 4 short papers out of 15, and HEALTHIOT 4 full papers out of 9. The papers cover topics such as AI in 5G and telecommunications, AI and e-health services, AI in 5G networks, incremental learning, clustering, AI in text mining, visual data analytics, AI in molecular biology, DNA, RNA, proteins, big data analytics, Internet of Things and recommender systems, and AI in biomedical applications.
This book presents a history of the correspondence principle from a new perspective. The author provides a unique exploration of the relation between the practice of theory and conceptual development in physics. In the process, he argues for a new understanding of the history of the old quantum theory and the emergence of quantum mechanics. The analysis looks at how the correspondence principle was disseminated and how the principle was applied as a research tool during the 1920s. It provides new insights into the interaction between theoretical tools and scientific problems and shows that the use of this theoretical tool changed the tool itself in a process of transformation through impleme...
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of two International Workshops held as parallel events of the 16th IFIP WG 12.5 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations, AIAI 2020, in Neos Marmaras, Greece, in June 2020: the 9th Mining Humanistic Data Workshop, MHDW 2020, and the 5th Workshop on 5G-Putting Intelligence to the Network Edge, 5G-PINE 2020.* The 6 full papers and 3 short papers presented at MHDW 2020 were carefully reviewed and selected from 16 submissions; out of the 23 papers submitted to 5G-PINE 2020, 11 were accepted as full papers and 1 as a short paper. The MHDW papers focus on topics such as recommendation systems, sentiment analysis, pattern recognition, data mining, and time series. The papers presented at 5G-PINE focus on the latest AI applications in the telecommunication industry and deal with topics such as the Internet of Things, intelligence fusion in 5G networks, and 5G media. *The workshops were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
