The Story of the Storyteller
This book traces the history of an engaging character, a writer, who acts as the narrator and protagonist of three of Vargas Llosa's novels. In La tía Julia y el escribidor he recalls his apprenticeship, in Historia de Mayta he reflects upon the practice of his craft, and in El hablador he ponders the significance of his vocation. That this fictional character closely resembles his flesh-and-blood creator only adds to his allure. Because the three novels in question have such strong structural and thematic links, it proves quite helpful to conceive of them as a trilogy. Indeed, the connections are so pronounced that a significant synergistic effect results from considering the three together. It is this effect that this volume brings light as it analyzes how each novel functions as a separate entity, how these entities are integrated into a greater whole, and how this whole fits into the wider picture of the Peruvian author's long and prolific literary career. Peruvian Traditions
Peruvian author Ricardo Palma (1838-1919) was one of the most popular and imitated writers in Latin America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As head of the National Library in Lima, Palma had access to a rich source of historical books and manuscripts. His historical miscellanies, which he called "traditions," are witty anecdotes about conquerors, viceroys, corrupt and lovelorn friars, tragic loves and notorious characters. Humor, irony and word play characterize his collection of over five hundred traditions written between 1872 and 1906, whether describing violent deeds or amorous misadventures. Unlike many of his contemporaries in the second half of the nineteenth century, Palma did not write transparent didactic fictions and defend elite cultural forms. Rather, he reveled in ironic approaches to written sources, political authorities and church institutions as well as in popular speech and knowledge. Both fiction and history, Palma's delightful Peruvian Traditions represents a hybrid literary form that constructs historical memory distinct from the dominant literary trends of the time.

The Boom in Barcelona

Prior studies of the Boom have essentially focused on the characteristics of the movement in Latin America and have been interested mainly in the originality or literary experimentalism of the Boom, in which these studies mirrored the ideals of the Cuban revolution. This groundbreaking book presents a history of the Boom in Spain as well as in Latin America and critiques the myth of originality of the Boom, which is only conventional inside the parameters of literary modernism. With this new perspective, the Boom appears as a manifestation of literary modernism, which repeats the history of the European avant-gardes of the second decade of the twentieth century.
