Candace de Taeye's debut full-length collection of poetry, Small Planes and the Dead Fathers of Lovers, explores with wit and sincerity ideas of family, relationship, and home. Beginning with poems of movement and travel, the book develops diverse and wide-ranging meditations on what it means to be at home in a place, to grow into it, and then also eventually to leave it. The poetry itself makes full use of the physical page, occupying each corner and making itself comfortable there, visually paralleling the process of being at home that it describes. The imagery moves by pairing seemingly disconnected ideas, strangers to one another, and then coaxing their more subtle connections into visibility, mirroring the way that the collection represents human relationships. The result is a book that provokes reflection on our uncertain contemporary experience of home and relationship in ways that readers will find both emotionally and intellectually compelling.

Night Lunch is a shapeshifting sonnet sequence set in the cold waters off the North Coast of Labrador. Reflecting Chaulk's own experience, the speaker - a young deckhand on a freight and passenger ferry servicing isolated communities - endures long irregular work hours, weather, icebergs, and loneliness, all the while navigating the taut intersections of race, labour, class, and masculinity. That Chaulk has Inuit family in and from Labrador makes this debut poetic journey a cultural coming-home for the young deckhand, as chronicled in supple, powerful verse.

"A best poem fulfills the promise set out in its first syllable, word, syntax, line break, and soundscape to its reader/listener." “What is a best poem?” asks Best Canadian Poetry 2020 guest editor Marilyn Dumont, the critically acclaimed and award-winning author of four poetry collections. “A best poem fulfills the promise set out in its first syllable, word, syntax, line break, and soundscape to its reader/listener. The work required to complete a poem takes risk, skill, and practice, and the poems selected for this anthology all exhibit such attributes.” In precise language that exposes the attitudes inherent in English, innovative forms that illuminate their content, and mastery ...
