As Sociedades Cooperativas e o Regime Jurídico Concursal

  • Categories: Law

In prefácio de Newton De Lucca.

The End of Democracy

The End of Democracy

Gilberto Lopes, with this profound and provocative study based on an ingenious imaginary dialogue between Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) and Karl Marx (1818-1883) on democracy, presents us with a disturbing work on one of the most important debates in today's political world. This work arises from a practical concern, from a life experience and a political restlessness, but also from a theoretical curiosity to make a journey inspired by the work of these two great thinkers who approached the history of their time with particular acuity and erudition. The relevance of the approaches presented here is evident as we face, day by day, the challenges that the "democracy" of today's world must confront: growing inequality, greater concentration of wealth, absurd wars and ever deeper and more widespread environmental deterioration. Faced with the state of political and economic confusion that reigns everywhere, Gilberto Lopes proposes, in a renewed and necessary debate on democracy and socialism, to glimpse the signs of progress on the road to equality suggested by Tocqueville as the great engine of history. This book aims to help us successfully reach the end of that road.

Sustainability in Practice

Sustainability is now a widely spread concept, and much progress has been achieved since the 1970s, when it started to be widely discussed. At present, many international organizations and scientists are active in implementing sustainable development as a whole and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular. Nevertheless, the main research agenda is being led by some countries, providing a good opportunity for other nations and regions which have not yet been so active, to bring their viewpoints to the global discussion. One of these regions is Latin America. Consistent with the need for more cross-sectorial and cross-cultural interactions among the various stakeholders workin...

Tax Residence in Brazil

Unlocking the complexities of individual tax residence is crucial for navigating both domestic and international income taxation. However, Brazil's current tax residence rules have fallen behind the pace of technological advancements and cultural shifts over the past century, leading to significant uncertainties. This analysis not only highlights these challenges but also presents a strategic proposal to modernize Brazil's tax legislation. By enhancing clarity and fairness, the updated rules will simplify compliance and reduce administrative burdens, ultimately fostering a more efficient tax system. Discover how this initiative aims to transform the landscape of individual tax residence in Brazil for a more equitable and streamlined approach.

Discovered over 40 years ago, the annexin proteins were found to be a structurally conserved subgroup of Ca2+-binding proteins. While the initial research on annexins focused on their signature feature of Ca2+-dependent binding to membranes, over the years, the biennial “Annexin” conference series has highlighted additional diversity in the functions attributed to the annexin family of proteins. The roles of these proteins now extend from basic science to biomedical research, and are being translated into clinical settings. Research on annexins involves a global network of researchers and the 10th biennial Annexin conference brought together over 80 researchers from ten European countries, USA, Brazil, Singapore, Japan, and Australia for 3 days in September 2019. In this conference, the discussions focused on two distinct themes — the role of annexins in cellular organization and health and disease. The articles published in this Special Issue cover these two main themes discussed at the conference, offering a glimpse into some of the notable findings in the field of annexin biology
