This volume addresses the widespread medieval phenomenon of transgression as both a result of and the cause for the exclusion and persecution of those who were considered different. It is widely accepted that the essence of a manuscript cannot be fully grasped without studying its marginalia. Glosses sit on the margins of the text and clarify it, adding a whole new dimension to it and becoming an inextricable part of its content. Similarly, no society can be fully understood without knowledge of what lies on its margins, for the outliers of any given culture provide us with just as much information as its alleged foundational principles. In a time when the Western world ponders building walls up against perceived threats and frightening differences, this multidisciplinary collection of essays based on original and innovative pieces of research shows that it was mostly through tearing down walls that we learned our way forward.

Elionor of Sicily, 1325–1375: A Mediterranean Queen’s Life of Family, Administration, Diplomacy, and War follows Elionor of Sicily, the third wife of the important Aragonese king, Pere III. Despite the limited amount of personal information about Elionor, the large number of Sicilian, Catalan, and Aragonese chronicles as well as the massive amount of notarial evidence drawn from eastern Spanish archives has allowed Donald Kagay to trace Elionor’s extremely active life roles as a wife and mother, a queen, a frustrated sovereign, a successful administrator, a supporter of royal war, a diplomat, a feudal lord, a fervent backer of several religious orders, and an energetic builder of royal sites. Drawing from the correspondence between the queen and her husband, official papers and communiques, and a vast array of notarial documents, the book casts light on the many phases of the queen’s life.
Versioning Cultural Objects
This volume approaches an understanding of the term versioning in the broadest sense, discussing ideas about how versions differ across forms of media, including text, image, and sound. Versions of cultural objects are identified, defined, articulated, and analysed through diverse mechanisms in different fields of research. The study of versions allows for the investigation of the creative processes behind the conception of works, a closer inspection of their socio-political contexts, and promotes investigation of their provenance and circulation. Chapters in this volume include discussion of what a "version" means in different fields, case studies implementing digital versioning techniques, conceptual models for representing versions digitally, and computational and management issues for digital projects.
Death and Gender in the Early Modern Period
IIn premodern Europe, the gender identity of those waiting for Doomsday in their tombs could be reaffirmed, readjusted, or even neutralized. Testimonies of this renegotiation of gender at the encounter with death is detectable in wills, letters envisioning oneself as dead, literary narratives, provisions for burial and memorialization, the laws for the disposal of those executed for heinous crimes and the treatment of human remains as relics.
Escribanos y escribanías en el Señorío de Vizcaya durante la Edad Moderna
En esta obra, la autora nos acerca al mundo de los escribanos y de las escribanías que existieron en el Señorío de Vizcaya durante los siglos xvi-xviii. Se trata de los hombres y cargos que se encargaron de la escritura en aquellas centurias y, de esta manera, nos aproximamos a un mundo de poder, pleitos y alianzas internas por conservar aquellas posiciones en la administración de la Edad Moderna. Los escribanos eran los encargados de redactar documentación diversa, como podían ser las actas de las reuniones de las instituciones, pero también los contratos matrimoniales, dotes o testamentos de personas particulares. Estamos ante una sociedad donde la tasa de analfabetismo era muy elevada, por lo que la figura del escribano jugaba un papel fundamental, ya que no solo escribía, sino que también solía explicar lo redactado. Así, teniendo en cuenta la legislación de la época, se presentan las identidades e identificación de los escribanos y de sus escribanías, su contexto familiar, formación jurídica y lingüística, y muchos de los pleitos en los que estuvieron inmersos.

En este libro se analizan los múltiples y variados aspectos en los que las instituciones monásticas y conventuales actúan como creadoras de objetos escritos, custodios de la memoria escrita y receptáculos de escrituras en los soportes más variados: inscripciones, libros, documentos y monedas, pinturas y esculturas, orfebrería y objetos de arte y de culto. Y ello con las finalidades más varias: preservación de la memoria y de los derechos y propiedades, celebración de los bienhechores y de la propia institución, enseñanza de la escritura y, como finalidad primordial, divulgación del mensaje cristiano entre los fieles.
