Women in the Piast Dynasty
This book analyses the role of women in the Polish Piast dynasty from c. 965 to c.1144. It discusses gender expectations and the literary topoi employed to describe rulers’ wives and daughters as well as showing their importance in religious donations, the creation of dynastic memory, and naming patterns, as well as examining Piast women’s involvement in female monasticism. Pac takes a comparative approach to these themes, analysing Polish sources alongside sources from other areas of early and high medieval Europe.

Jakie miejsce zajmowały kobiety w pierwszej polskiej dynastii? Czego od nich oczekiwano i jak rozumiano ich społeczne role? Czy kobiety bywały podmiotem działań, czy też pozostawały wyłącznie instrumentami w grze prowadzonej przez mężczyzn? Na te pytania szukamy odpowiedzi w prezentowanej książce. Przedstawia ona dynastię Piastów w okresie pierwszych dwustu lat polskiej państwowości, ukazując ją na tle innych rodów panujących Europy wcześniejszego średniowiecza. Podejmowane analizy koncentrują się m.in. na obecnych w kulturze wcześniejszego średniowiecza żeńskich wzorcach zachowań, roli kobiet jako fundatorek i dobrodziejek Kościoła, ich zaangażowaniu w liturgiczną pamięć rodu i wpływie na jego imiennictwo, a także na funkcjach, jakie pełnił w dynastii rodowy klasztor żeński. Na okres wczesnopiastowski patrzymy więc z innej perspektywy, stawiając w centrum zainteresowania nieme dotąd bohaterki rodzimych dziejów – żony i córki polskich władców.

Christian Russia in the Making
The present collection of studies by Andrzej Poppe in many ways represents a continuation of the research brought together a quarter century ago in the author's previous Variorum volume. The focal themes are the political circumstances of the 'baptism of Russia' and the processes by which Rus' became a Christian country, an era marked by the emergence of indigenous saints in royal and monastic garb. Relations with the Byzantine world, both political and ecclesiastical, are often to the fore, but as Poppe shows, those with the West, from the Carolingians onwards, were important too. Many of the articles are provided with additional notes, and the volume includes three pieces previously unpublished in English, including an introductory survey of the Rurikid dynasty, and a major new study of the process by which Vladimir the Great became a saint.

The Politics of Public Spending
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of public money and its political and societal implications. Drawing on evidence from central and eastern Europe, it offers an innovative insight into public responses to various strategies of public spending. Given that public expenditures are funded mainly from tax revenues, it also assesses public attitudes to politically motivated allocations of funds. The book seeks to identify how people evaluate the material benefits of funding in light of the fairness - or lack thereof - of the distribution process, whether popular acceptance of variations in public spending depends on the framing of the beneficiaries, and the implications of money allocation for political trust in political institutions.
